J.J. Abrams on the DVD Release of Super 8: ‘I’m Sure Some People Don’t Think My Technique Works for Them’ (New York Magazine)
As the face of Bad Robot Productions, J.J. Abrams has a hand in _Person of
Interest_, _Cloverfield_, the forthcoming _Alcatraz _TV series, the _Star
Trek_ reboot, and _Super 8_ -- the latter two of which he directed. Oh, and
_Lost_. Did we mention _Lost?_ Have you ever heard of this little TV show
called _Lost_? As he continues to spread himself into all corners of the sci-
fi spectrum (_Super 8_ recently came out on Blu-ray), we chatted with Abrams
about summer blockbusters, the proper way to unravel a mystery, and _Lost_'s
looming shadow.
**_Super 8_ isn't your first blockbuster summer film. What attracts you to the
genre?**
While I've always been a fan of the mainstream, big, fun movies, I've also
been a fan of the pure weird, smaller ones. I happen to have directed or
written films that have come out during the summer more than not, although
_Mission: Impossible_, which we produced, comes out next month. The release
date ends up being a little bit beside the point. Though, again, there's
nothing more fun for me than going to a really great summer blockbuster, where

Zombie - $14.99 This audaciously disgusting spectacle from the late master of gruesome horror, Lucio Fulci, was posited as a semi-sequel to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, which was released in Italy as Zombi. Tisa Farrow and a group of vacationing tourists travel to an island where they find a doctor (Richard Johnson) who is attempting to cure a condition that reanimates the dead. Things quickly get out of control as undead Spanish conquistadors crawl from their graves hungry for human flesh. The nauseatingly graphic set-pieces by Gianetto de Rossi include a close-up of a woman's eye being pierced by a large shard of wood and a zombie fighting a Great White shark underwater.
