Nature's Castle In Costa Blanca
A lot of mountain lovers who spend their holidays to Costa Blanca find time to climb the Montgo, a mountain located in Spain's Marina Alta Region at the Alicante Province. At 753 meters, it is not considered by mountaineers as a tall mountain. But because it dramatically rises from the valley floor, it can be seen in the skyline miles away.
Mountain climbers all over the world visit the Montgo not just to conquer the summit of the mountain but to look at the wonders around it. In fact, because the mountain and its surroundings displays a vast wealth of plants, animals, and archaeological finds, a 2,150-hectare area around Montgo has been declared as a nature reserve.
More than 650 species of unique plants are found on Montgo such as the Mediterranean oak, Kermis oak, Mount Atlas pistachio, white hellebore, rock lavender, and marine juniper. Higher still, climbers encounter Valencian rock violets, wild blue fan palms, and the endemic Hierba Santa. Nearer the base of the mountain are Marine fennels, everlastings, and rock thistle, species that possess good resistance against salt water and air.
The peak also houses a huge variety of animals. Birds of prey such as the Eagle Owl, Goshawk, Peregrine Falcon, Kestrel, and the Sparrow Hawk make their nests here. They hunt snakes, badgers, gineta, weasels, bats, and foxes that live in the birds mountain home. At the lower sections of the mountain facing the sea, one can find the Sandwich Tern, Audouin's Gull, Yellow-Footed Gull, and other sea-borne species. They fly in the area together with other migratory birds, which are in abundance.
Finally, the Montgo is dotted with cave paintings, remains of stone hand axes and flints, pottery, and ceramics that date more than 30,000 years ago. This indicates that the mountain has been inhabited by hunter-gatherers during the Paleolithic age.
