Best of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Vol. 2 - B&W $8.99 Includes:The Dick Van Dyke Show: Where Did I Come From? (1962) The Dick Van Dyke Show: That's My Boy? (1963) The Dick Van Dyke Show: It May Look Like a Walnut! (1963) The Dick Van Dyke Show: October Eve (1964) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Where Did I Come From? No synopsis available. The Dick Van Dyke Show: That's My Boy? The third season of The Dick Van Dyke Show opens with one of the series' funniest and most celebrated episodes. In flashback, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) recalls the day that he and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) brought their newborn son Ritchie home from the hospital. A series of bizarre incidents, coupled with the ditzy behavior of the OB-GYN nurse, convince Rob that he has the wrong baby, and that a couple named Peters have unwittingly gone home with the Petrie infant. Despite Laura's protests, Rob invites Mr. and Mrs. Peters to his home to reveal the dire news -- only to get the surprise of his life, not to mention the lives of every viewer who watched this episode when it first aired on September 25, 1963. (Not only was the punch line one of the best-kept secrets in TV history, it was astonishingly timely, given the momentous sociopolitical events of the previous summer!) ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: It May Look Like a Walnut! The Dick Van Dyke Show invades Twilight Zone territory in this unforgettable episode. Unable to sleep one night, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) turns on the TV and watches a sci-fi movie about "Kolac," evil emissary from the planet Twilo, who uses cosmic walnuts to turn human beings into three-eyed, thumbless aliens. The next morning, Rob is astonished when Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) serves him a breakfast consisting entirely of walnuts -- and even more so when, at the office, Buddy (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally (Rose Marie) are energetically discussing the previous day's speech at the U.N. by "Kolac from Twilo." But nothing prepares Rob for the unexpected arrival of a three-eyed Danny Thomas -- nor the sudden disappearance of his own thumbs! (And by the way: would you believe that this man has 2,000 bees on his face?) ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: October Eve Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) is mortified when a portrait of herself, painted many years earlier as a present to Rob (Dick Van Dyke), shows up at a local art gallery. In flashback, she recalls how she posed for the painting fully clothed -- but when the masterpiece was finished, there she was on canvas, standing with arms outstretched, naked as a jaybird! Series creator Carl Reiner appears as the perpetrator of "October Eve," eccentric Russian artist Serge Carpetna. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Best of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Vol. 1 - B&W $8.99 Includes:The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Sick Boy and the Sitter (1961) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Big Max Calvada (1963) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth (1965) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Dear Sally Rogers (1966) The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Sick Boy and the Sitter In this very first episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, little Richie Petrie (Larry Mathews) is a bit feverish, and his mom Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) doesn't want to leave him with a babysitter. But Laura's hubby Rob (Dick Van Dyke) insists that Laura accompany him to a party at the penthouse of Rob's boss, comedian Alan Brady (actually, the party is more of a command performance, since Rob and the rest of Alan's writing staff is expected to entertain). Much against her better judgment, Laura agrees to entrust Richie to the sitter, and off the Petries go to the party, where a good time is had by all -- except Laura, who is convinced that something terrible will happen at home. And when Rob and Laura return to their split-level in New Rochelle, a state of disarray and few drops of blood convince Laura that her worst fears have been realized...or have they? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: Big Max Calvada Dick Van Dyke Show executive producer Sheldon Leonard guest stars as Big Max Calvada, a notorious mob figure who has ostensibly gone legit. Approaching the writing staff of "The Alan Brady Show," Big Max offers to pay them an enormous sum to write a nightclub routine for his nephew Kenny (Jack Larson), an aspiring comedian. Alas, Kenny is utterly bereft of talent, but when Rob (Dick Van Dyke) tries to tell this to Big Max, the mobster merely offers even more money for the monologue -- and also drops a few subtle hints that Rob better do what he's asked if he wants to stay healthy! Ultimately, Kenny makes his professional debut, the disastrous results of which lead to a surprising denouement. Best line: "Have you ever seen a man put on a tie to take a shower?" ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth Season five of The Dick Van Dyke Show opens with one of the series' best episodes -- and an Emmy Award-winner to boot. While in the audience of "The Johnny Patrick Show," Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) is coerced to join host Patrick (Dick Curtis) on-stage, even though she's been warned that Johnny specializes in getting his guests to make embarrassing statements. True to form, Patrick maneuvers Laura into revealing that Alan Brady (Carl Reiner), the comedian boss of her writer husband Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke), wears a toupee. The climax of this episode contains some of the funniest lines ever written for the show, beginning with Alan's melancholy farewell speech to a row of expensive hairpieces, and culminating with Laura's far-from-helpful reference to "needy bald people"! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: Dear Sally Rogers Once again guesting on the late-night "Stevie Parsons Show," Sally (Rose Marie) opts for a few quick laughs by advert |

Best of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Vol. 4 - B&W $8.99 Includes:The Dick Van Dyke Show: Oh How We Met the Night That We Danced (1961) The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Blonde-Haired Brunette (1961) The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Alan Brady Show Goes to Jail (1964) The Dick Van Dyke Show: 4.5 (1964) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Oh How We Met the Night That We Danced Rob (Dick Van Dyke) and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) recall how they first met, back when he was an Army sergeant and she was a USO dancer. It is hardly love at first sight, with Laura convinced that Rob is an egotistical jerk. But Rob has determined that Laura is the woman who will one day be his wife, and he will go to any lengths to win her affections -- even if it means performing a dance duet that results in a broken foot (and it isn't his). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Blonde-Haired Brunette An exhausted Rob (Dick Van Dyke) pays but scant attention to Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) on his day off, convincing Laura that Rob has grown tired of her. Next-door neighbor Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) suggests a sure-fire method to win back Rob's affections. All Laura has to do is dye her hair blonde! Unfortunately, Millie runs out of coloring before the dyeing job is completed, leaving Laura's hair looking like a Rand-McNally map of Europe! Although "The Blonde-Haired Brunette" was the ninth Dick Van Dyke Show filmed, the producers decided to move it up to the second episode telecast to show off the peerless comic skills of their "new discovery," Mary Tyler Moore. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Alan Brady Show Goes to Jail In the conclusion of a two-part story, lovable convict Lyle Delp (Don Rickles) arranges for the staff of "The Alan Brady Show" to give a special performance for the men at the state penitentiary. Dressed in a convict costume for a dance routine with Laura (Mary Tyler Moore), Rob is mistaken for a genuine prisoner and locked up with a bunch of showbiz-happy inmates. The episode's musical highlights include "In Them Old Cotton Fields Back Home," "Sweet Sue," and -- delightfully appropriate to the prison setting -- "I've Got Your Number." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: 4.5 In the first episode of a two-part story, the staff of "The Alan Brady Show" is invited to put on a performance for the men in the state penitentiary. The convict arranging the show is Lyle Delp (Don Rickles), who turns out to be an old friend of Rob (Dick Van Dyke) and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore). In flashback, Rob recalls how he and a pregnant Laura first met Lyle when the hapless habitual criminal tried to hold them up at gunpoint (or rather, "comb-point") in a stalled elevator. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Best of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Vol. 3 - B&W $8.99 Includes:The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Secret Life of Buddy and Sally (1962) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Never Bathe on Saturday (1965) The Dick Van Dyke Show: 100 Terrible Hours (1965) The Dick Van Dyke Show: Uhny Uftz (1965) The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Secret Life of Buddy and Sally Rob (Dick Van Dyke) can't understand why Buddy (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally (Rose Marie) have of late been making themselves scarce on weekends. All he can determine is that his fellow writers are working on a "secret project." Concern turns into mortal fear when Rob concludes that Buddy and Sally have accepted an independent gag-writing assignment -- which of course would spell the end of their contracts with "The Alan Brady Show." The solution to the mystery is not quite so cataclysmic, but it is immensely enjoyable! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: Never Bathe on Saturday In this classic episode, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) give their neighbor Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) the lowdown about their big weekend in New York, which was supposed to have involved a romantic getaway at a plush hotel and a fabulous night at a Broadway show. Unfortunately, the couple's plans were radically altered when, while taking a bath, Laura got her big toe stuck in the bathtub faucet! Legend has it that Mary Tyler Moore burst into tears when she read the script for this episode because it required her to be off-camera for most of the action; but when the show finally aired, she realized that it represented one of her finest half-hours. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: 100 Terrible Hours During a magazine interview, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) recalls his first job interview with Alan Brady (Carl Reiner) -- which, quite frankly, he can barely remember at all. It seems that, just before the all-important interview, Rob, then a radio DJ, had participated in a stunt wherein he was obliged to broadcast nonstop for 100 hours. Naturally, this required him to go without sleep -- and by the time he presented himself to Alan Brady, Rob was, to put it mildly, a gibbering shell of his former self! This episode was originally slated to air on April 7, 1965. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: Uhny Uftz Working at the office late at night ("like the last living cell in a dead body"), an overtired Rob (Dick Van Dyke) hears and sees what he thinks is a flying saucer. Alerting his writing partner Buddy (Morey Amsterdam), the two men follow the strange-looking (and stranger-sounding) object to a room in the office building that they never knew existed. Sure enough, our heroes have stumbled into the experimental lab of a scientist who, if not technically "mad,"is certainly a bit off-center. And don't think for a moment that we're going to explain the significance of the episode's title! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Best of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Vol. 5 - B&W $8.99 Includes:The Dick Van Dyke Show: One Angry Man (1962) The Dick Van Dyke Show: What's in a Middle Name? (1962) The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Curious Thing About Women (1962) The Dick Van Dyke Show: All About Eavesdropping (1963) The Dick Van Dyke Show: One Angry Man Rob (Dick Van Dyke) is called for jury duty in a trial where the defendant is gorgeous Marla Hendrix (Sue Ane Langdon). Naturally, Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) is jealous over Rob's close proximity to such a beautiful and desirable woman. The situation isn't helped at all when, in the jury room, Rob is the only juror who holds out for a "not guilty" verdict. This episode marks one of several '60s "comeback" appearances by the delightful character comedian Patsy Kelly. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: What's in a Middle Name? A confused Ritchie (Larry Mathews) stops Rob (Dick Van Dyke) and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) cold during breakfast one morning with a big question: Why is Ritchie's middle name "Rosebud"? In answer, Rob and Laura flash back to a family gathering at the Petrie home a few months before Ritchie's birth, where virtually every one of their relatives was throwing out suggestions as to the best name for the new arrival. Without giving away the episode's punch line, it should be noted that among the guests are Rob's father Sam (J. Pat O'Malley) and the formidable Grandfather Petrie (Cyril Delevanti), who favors the name "Ulysses David." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Curious Thing About Women Upset that Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) insists upon opening his mail, Rob (Dick Van Dyke) decides to write a comedy sketch about this situation -- names and particulars changed, of course. When the sketch appears on "The Alan Brady Show," the Petries' neighbors the Helpers immediately recognize the "wife" in the routine as a thinly-disguised Laura, an assumption she hotly denies -- and when Rob gets home, he gets in the neck from his outraged spouse. However, Rob gets his revenge in a delightful fashion when a mysterious package arrives at the Petrie doorstep a few days later. Trivia note: though actress Ann Morgan Guilbert (Millie Helper) is obviously very pregnant in this episode, series creator Carl Reiner never capitalized on this fact by writing a "new baby" episode -- and in fact, no explanation was ever offered regarding Guilbert's drastic weight loss the following season! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Dick Van Dyke Show: All About Eavesdropping Accidentally listening into a conversation between Jerry and Millie on the intercom, Rob and Laura are offended by the comments made about themselves by their neighbors. Thus, when the Petries behave in a brusque, angry manner at a party at the Helpers, Jerry and Millie can't figure out what's wrong -- and are even more confused by the veiled, double-meaning comments made during an otherwise harmless game of charades. Inevitably, Rob and Laura learn their lesson about eavesdropping -- but it takes nearly the entire episode, |
