The Hormone Diet: A 3-Step Program to Help You Lose Weight, Gain Strength, and Live Younger Longer by Natasha Turner N.D.   by Richard Stooker

So far as I know, Dr. Barry Sears in his first book Enter the Zone in 1995 was the first to put forth the proposition that the real clue to gaining and losing weight (and good health) was not calories or even metabolism, but hormonal balance.

Insulin controls whether your cells store or burn fat, he said. If your insulin is high, it's very difficult to lose weight. You can cut your calories down, but if the foods you do eat raise your insulin, forget about it.

There are still a lot of weightloss experts who dispute this, and uphold the calories in, calories out model. It can kind of work, because it's logical conclusion is to cut out calorie-rich foods such as all sugar and starches, including grains. These foods, it turns out, are the very same ones that most raise insulin levels.

The author was diagnosed with a thyroid problem when still a young woman, making her very aware that healthy people need to have and maintain a healthy balance of all their hormones.

Therefore, this book addresses all the major human hormones, not just just insulin and glucagon. It includes testosterone, estrogen, thyroid hormone, DHEA and human growth hormone. She also discusses hormones that have been found recently but which relate to how full we feel -- leptin and ghrelin.

She goes into a lot of detail about how these hormones affect us, and the symptoms of having too little and too much of them.

The actual diet is, in my opinion, nothing special. It's not as structured as the Zone Diet. If you're following the Zone, you've got your hormones pretty well covered.

She is strong on emphasizing other activities that contribute toward weight gain or loss.

For instance, she goes into a lot of depth and detail about the connection between obesity and not getting enough sleep. We need sleep for hormones that make us feel full, as well as for human growth hormone which builds muscles and helps us lose weight.

She insists that exercise be an intrinsic part of your weight loss program as well. However, she is aware that chronic cardio as many people practice is not the most effective form. She mentions sprinting, and includes strength exercises. She also emphasizes the need to spend a day or more a week simply resting and recovering from the exercise we did the day before.

I would give this book a solid B for covering a lot of bases, and covering them well and in depth. It fails to get an A because she doesn't really say anything new, or to package it as well as possible, or to keep her diet as strict and yet easy to follow as possible.

If you want to read just one weightloss book, this one would be one of your best choices available. I'm sure that people who follow her suggestions do lose weight and feel better.

J.M.W. Turner -

Often incorrectly associated with the Impressionist School of art, Joseph Mallord William Turner in fact qualified as a harbinger of that movement; though similar to artists such as Monet and Renoir, the style that Turner exhibited actually predated the others by decades. Throughout Turner's career, he specialized in depicting seascapes, and exercised an unusual combination of luminescent and atmospheric elements; perhaps as a result, art historians now regard him as one of the preeminent English landscape painters. The National Gallery documentary program J.M.W. Turner carries audiences on a painting-by-painting retrospective of the artist's work, set to music and intercut with on-camera trips to the locales Turner inhabited. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Turner and the Masters

Turner and the Masters

$48.77

"Turner and the Masters" juxtaposes J.M.W. Turner's greatest paintings alongside works by old masters and contemporaries that he hoped to imitate, rival, and surpass. Published to accompany a major international exhibition, it explores for the first time how Turner's responses to other artists were both acts of homage and a sophisticated form of art criticism, designed to demonstrate his understanding of great art and his ability to equal and even outshine the most celebrated exponents of the landscape tradition. With some 100 works reproduced in glorious colorplates, the book includes paintings by Claude, Canaletto, Ruisdael, Van de Velde, Poussin, Rubens, Rembrandt, Constable, Bonington and many others who Turner knew personally. The paintings and text together reveal the artist's debts and rivalries in an exciting and often unpredictable way, serving to further re-establish Turner's reputation as the one of the greatest--and most beloved--of landscape painters

J.M.W. Turner's lifetime (1775-1851). was also the classic age of the English watercolor, and his mastery and perfection of the medium coincided with its establishment as an independent art form. He rarely left his home without a sketchbook, pencils, and a small traveling case of watercolors. He exploited as no one before him the medium's luminosity and transparency, conjuring light effects on English meadows and Venetian lagoons and gauzy mists over mountains and lakes. Extraordinary in his own time, he has continued to thrill countless admirers since. In an extensive and illuminating introduction, internationally acclaimed Turner expert David Blayney Brown provides a context to the watercolors and a background to the Tate's unrivalled collection of Turner's work.

Turner and Hooch -

Turner and Hooch -

$4.99

One by-product of two consecutive Oscar wins is that Tom Hanks no longer has to appear in such potboilers as Turner and Hooch. Hanks plays Turner, a meticulously groomed, excruciatingly well-organized detective working in a small California coastal town. When local "character" Amos Reed (John McIntire) is murdered by drug smugglers, the only witness is Reed's slobbery, smelly mutt, Hooch. You're way ahead of us, folks: Turner, who despises dogs in general and Hooch in particular, is compelled to put the cantankerous dog up as his house guest. Also easily predictable is the fact that Turner and Hooch will, by the next-to-last reel, become boon companions. To its credit, the film has an abundance of laughs and thrills...but, gee, that ending! Neither terrific nor terrible, Turner and Hooch is a pleasant time-filler; we do wish, however, that more time had been spent on the budding romance between Turner and veterinarian Emily Carson (Mare Winningham). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Turner's Paintbox

Turner's Paintbox

$9.69

When art dealer Gerard Moyne falls in love with the elusive Julia, their attraction is as mysterious as the workings of art, their affair too perfect to last. Gerard has a passion for the genius of J.M.W. Turner - the painter of light - whose story shadows his and Julia's. For Gerard, whose own perspective is beguiling if sometimes callous, Turner is the ultimate aesthete, the supreme technician, the most devoted of artists. Gerard delights in explaining him to Julia. But rather than dutifully learning her lessons, Julia sees something else in the painter. She, without knowing much about art, knows something about life. Lyrically stylish, Turner's Paintbox is a tale of beauty and cruelty, one that ponders whether we can love another and yet stay true to ourselves.

J.M.W. Turner

J.M.W. Turner

In this second volume in the Ackroyd’s Brief Lives series, bestselling author Peter Ackroyd brings us a man of humble beginnings, crude manners, and prodigious talents, the nineteenth-century painter J. M. W. Turner. Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history. Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money. Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.” Also available in ACKROYD’S BRIEF LIVES Chaucer

This film is one in a series on English painters, which tells the painters' stories with their works, recollections, and commentary by art historians. In this volume, the great water colorist and oil painter J.M.W. Turner is featured. Born in 1775, Turner became the foremost English painter of the romantic movement. He painted in a unique style that has been described as "tinted steam." Such was the feeling of color and light in his landscapes. His works, which grew more abstract over the years, were very influential on the French Impressionists. The essayist John Ruskin was an admirer of Turner's work, and wrote glowing literary reviews of the painter's seascapes. Turner left to Britain over 19,000 watercolors, drawings, and oils. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, Rovi

At eighteen, Paul Porterfield's dream is to play the piano at the world's great concert halls, yet so far the closest he has come has been turning pages for his idol, Richard Kennington, a former piano prodigy on the cusp of middle age. Then, on vacation in Rome with his mother, Pamela, Paul encounters Kennington a second time. A love affair begins between the two - one that is complicated when Pamela misconstrues Kennington's attention toward her son as a sign of interest in her. Alarmed by the situation, Kennington flees Rome for New York, where Joseph Mansourian, his manager (and lover) of twenty-five years, awaits him; Paul, too, goes to New York to study at Juilliard. They do not see each other. Yet the brief affair will affect their lives in ways that neither could have predicted. "Why can't people have what they want?" It is around this question that David Leavitt's new novel so movingly pivots. By turns comic and heartbreaking, shrewd and intimate, The Page Turner testifies not only to the tenacity of the human spirit but to the resiliency of the human heart.

The Confessions of Nat Turner

The Confessions of Nat Turner

$8.99

Few modern American novelists have dared as much as William Styron in writing The Confessions of Nat Turner. A white man and a Tidewater Virginian by birth, Styron put himself inside the life and mind of Nat Turner, the black man who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. It is a true story told as a novel, though the author prefers to call it 'a meditation on history' rather than a historical novel. Many black critics scorned it when it was published, refusing to accept Styrons bold conceit, though the novel won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize in fiction and was one of the most acclaimed American novels of its time.
