Nite Jewel - "One Second of Love" (PitchforkBestNewTracks)
When L.A. artist Ramona Gonzalez released her first collection of lo-fi lounge
music as Nite Jewel in 2008, her eight-track creations made a mark among the
avant-pop underground. Her inaugural _Good Evening_ LP generated ample
interest in bedroom-disco, with highlights like "Weak for Me" and "What Did He
Say?" pegging her aesthetic: 1980s pop filtered through a tin can. Her vibe
was charming, but better suited for headphones than a club, and from the
beginning her technique suggested she could move beyond the limits of cassette
culture.
Nite Jewel's sound has gradually developed since then, and following a string
of releases for boutique labels like Italians Do It Better and Mexican Summer,
"One Second of Love" reaches a new level. Whereas her previous recordings were
capable only of hinting at Eno-like instrumentals, this song recalls them
strongly, offering four minutes of funk-oriented pop with a crisp, galactic
feel. Gonzalez' voice booms over the snappy synth grooves, and a mid-tempo
drum beat provides a cool, danceable sway. It could all easily remind you of
the Samps, and rightfully so. That group's member Cole M. Greif-Neill produced
and played on the entire record, which comes via Secretly Canadian ...

Tin Drum $11.99 Japan: David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming, tapes); Richard Barbieri (keyboards, programming, tapes); Mick Karn (fretless bass, African flute, dida); Steve Jansen (drums, percussion, programming).Additional personnel: Yuka Fujii (vocals); Simon House (violin).TIN DRUM, Japan's fifth studio album, appeared with a cover photograph of a perfectly coifed David Sylvian eating rice from a bowl in a bare room, while a peeling poster of Mao looked on. This image was obviously very deliberately created, and the music on this, their last studio album as Japan, is no less carefully presented. TIN DRUM has been said to be their most "Oriental" album, but it also has equally prevalent Middle Eastern influences, especially in regards to Steve Jansen's percussion. All told, it is probably the band's best single record."The Art of Parties" opens the album with synthesizers twittering around Mick Karn's extraordinary bass guitar. "Talking Drum" features a flute straight from a snake charmer's stall. "Canton' is a propulsive, Asian-flavored instrumental. Arguably, the album's best track is "Still Life in Mobile Homes," a strange keyboard and drum-led song that features Karn at his most inventive. "Visions of China" adds some funk to the beat, while "Sons of Pioneers" is a spectacular drum and bass-driven track that is achingly atmospheric. This is a classic--if you own one Japan album, TIN DRUM ought to be it. |

The Tin Drum $9.29 The Tin Drum one of the great novels of the twentieth century was published in Ralph Manheim's outstanding translation in 1959. It became a runaway bestseller and catapulted its young author to the forefront of world literature. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the original publication Houghton Mifflin Harcourt along with Grass's publishers all over the world is bringing out a new translation of this classic novel. Breon Mitchell acclaimed translator and scholar has drawn from many sources: from a wealth of detailed scholarship; from a wide range of newly-available reference works; and from the author himself. The result is a translation that is more faithful to Grass's style and rhythm restores omissions and reflects more fully the complexity of the original work. After fifty years THE TIN DRUM has if anything gained in power and relevance. All of Grass's amazing evocations are still there and still amazing: Oskar Matzerath the indomitable drummer; his grandmother Anna Koljaiczek; his mother Agnes; Alfred Matzerath and Jan Bronski his presumptive fathers; Oskar's midget friends-Bebra the great circus master and Roswitha Raguna the famous somnambulist; Sister Scholastica and Sister Agatha the Right Reverend Father Wiehnke; the Greffs the Schefflers Herr Fajngold all Kashubians Poles Germans and Jews-waiting to be discovered and re-discovered. |

The Tin Drum - Widescreen Subtitle $34.99 In Volker Schl?ndorff's award-winning adaptation of Nobel Prize winner G?nter Grass' allegorical novel, David Bennent plays Oskar, the young son of a German rural family, circa 1925. On his third birthday, Oskar receives a shiny new tin drum. At this point, rather than mature into one of the miserable specimens of grown-up humanity that he sees around him, he vows never to get any older or any bigger. Whenever the world around him becomes too much to bear, the boy begins to hammer on his drum; should anyone try to take the toy away from him, he emits an ear-piercing scream that literally shatters glass. As Germany goes to hell during the 1930s and '40s, the never-aging Oskar continues savagely beating his drum, serving as the angry conscience of a world gone mad. The intense and visceral Tin Drum was one of the most financially successful German films of the 1970s and won the 1979 Oscar for Best Foreign Film and the 1979 Golden Palm (which it shared with Apocalypse Now). In the late '90s, the film became the center of a censorship controversy when some U.S. videotapes were confiscated because of the film's supposed violation of a child pornography statute. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Approaches to Teaching Grass's the Tin Drum $25.65 The career of GAA1/4nter Grass began dramatically in 1959, with the publication of his first novel. The Tin Drum brought instant fame to the thirty-two-year-old author and led to his receiving the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. Translated into dozens of languages, the novel has sold over four million copies worldwide. Its status as a major text of postwar German literature, however, has not diminished its provocative nature. In both style and content, it continues to challenge scholars, teachers, and students. This volume, like others in the MLA series Approaches to Teaching World Literature, is divided into two parts. Part 1, "Materials," provides the instructor with bibliographic information on the text, critical studies, and audiovisual and Internet resources. Part 2, "Approaches," contains eighteen essays on teaching The Tin Drum, including three that discuss VAAlker SchlAAndorff's 1979 film adaptation of the novel. Some of the topics covered are the historical context (Nazism, World War II, the Holocaust), Oskar Matzerath as an unreliable narrator, the imagery (e.g., eels, the Virgin Mary), the use of German fairy tales, and how Grass's satirical treatment of Germany speaks to postwar generations. |
