Beautiful Arundel Castle

Arundel castle is of course a very old building and it was founded by Roger de Montogomery on Christmas Day 1067 and he actually became the very first person out there to hold the earldom of Arundel by William the Conqueror. The castle was very badly damaged during the time of the English Civil War but they managed to restore it to its former glory in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a big reason why people get holidays Sussex in this area.

The castle was first built in 1086 and was built as major fortification for the mouth of the River Arun. Once Roger died it was handed over to the crown under the King at the time Henry I.

The medieval time period was next and you will find that during this time it was simply handed down to various people without much happening. The crown seized the castle after Thomas Howard was executed for conspiring to marry Mary Queen of Scots but later it was returned to the heir of the Earls of Arundel.

The Howard family then kept the castle but did nothing to it as they had wanted to resore other buildings until the castle came into the hands of Charles Howard. 1787 was the year in which the castle started to see more and more work carried out upon it, once this was completed a big party was held and Charles died not long after.

Queen Victoria paid a visit to the castle in 1846 and enjoyed the experience , the 14th Duke then started even more work on the castle and this is how you see it today held by the 18th Duke.

The great thing about the castle is that most of it is open to the public so make sure that if you can you can take a break from that web design job in that serviced offices Soho office and get out there to pay it a visit!

The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. It's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song "Windmills of Your Mind" lacks the suave psyc...

For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks...

When a priceless Monet painting is stolen from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the police find themselves wondering which world-class art thief pulled the job. What they don't know is that the thief wasn't a professional, but an amateur. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) was born poor but made his way through Oxford on a boxing scholarship. With his sharp sense for business and ruthless ambition, Crown has become a self-made billionaire; but despite his wealth and power, he still seeks new challenges, and he steals art not for the profits but for the sheer excitement. However, as fun as art theft might be, it's still illegal, and investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is brought in to track down the culprit. Certain clues point to Crown, so Banning introduces herself into Crown's social circle. Police detective Michael McCann (Denis Leary) warns Banning against getting too close to Crown. She takes McCann's suggestion lightly -- until she finds herself falling for the suave thief. The Thomas Crown Affair was adapted from the popular 1968 caper film of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway; Dunaway appears in the new film as Crown's analyst. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is a self-made Boston millionaire who masterminds a bank heist in hopes of leaving it all behind. Tired of being part of the Establishment, he has hopes of pulling off the caper and flying to Rio. Erwin Weaver (Jack Weston) leads the cast of crooks who never actually meet Crown but manage to pull off the robbery without a hitch. Crown deposits 3 million in a Swiss bank account, pays off the crooks, and waits for the insurance company to repay the bank for the loss. Eddy Malone (Paul Burke) is the savvy detective who helps insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) find the mastermind behind the heist. Thomas Crown Affair became one of the first films to employ many split-screen images throughout its running time, as devised by editor Hal Ashby. Michel Legrand's score was nominated for an Academy Award, and the song The Windmills Of Your Mind, written by Legrand with Alan and Marilyn Bergman took home the coveted Oscar. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

While the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair couldn't really hold a candle to the magnificent 1967 original, the soundtrack is a little better. Bill Conti's score -- while not as pungent as Michel Legrand's original -- is still effective and probing. One of the highlights of this version is Sting's version of the classic "Windmills of Your Mind," which brings a slight (and welcome) reggae element to this song. Nina Simone's "Sinner Man" is almost as good, highlighting her fabulous blues/jazz vocals. ~ Matthew Greenwald Original score composed by Bill Conti. Valley Bill Conti

Individual pieces, gems, and carefully selected groups of objects: the royal jewels can be seen here as never before. The priceless objects in the collection were created to be the physical embodiment of English sovereignty, and their story is that of the English monarchy itself from the spoon used to pour out the holy oil of St. Thomas Becket at the coronation to the crown that King Edward VIII took into exile after he abdicated in 1936. In addition to the specially taken photographs of the jewels there are paintings and photographs of monarchs wearing the regalia, coronation ceremonies, and royal events during which items from the collection are used.
