That Time
Why Is it that time slows down as yo reach the speed of light?
If this is tru, Then light is traveling at th speed of light it that makes time happen?Or what, and why do people say the that time slows as yopu reach the speed of light. I heard some where that if you where traveling at the speed of light for one week then yo returned back to earth it would be 50,000 years later?

The reason for time dilation is wrapped up in the fact that the speed of light is constant, regardless of the motion of the light source or the observer. This is not intuitive, but it has been observed countless times, and it is fundamental to relativity. It means that if you are traveling away from a star at .9 x the speed of light, the light from that star will still pass you at exactly the speed of light - relative to you.
Now, do a thought experiment, like Einstein used to do. Picture yourself on an asteroid watching a spaceship pass by at near light speed. The space ship is made of transparent material, and the crew compartment has a highly polished floor. As the ship passes, the pilot shines a flashlight downward toward the floor. The pilot sees the beam of light shine down and then reflect straight back up in a straight line like this: I But you see something different. Since the ship is passing at near light speed, you see the light beam going down and back up in a V shape as it passes you.
Now the distance that these two paths take is clearly different between your frame of reference and the pilot's frame. In your world, the path is longer as measured by you because of the V shape that you see. We know that distance = rate x time. But the rate (the speed of light) is THE SAME as seen by both of you - because the speed of light is constant. In order for this to make sense and not change the sequence of events from one part of the universe to another, the elapsed time must therefore change. You see the time in the passing spaceship as moving slower than the pilot does for the same series of events. The pilot does not notice it, his world has not changed. But the way light works demands that time is relative, based on the relative speed of two frames of reference. Hope this helps.
