Appearing to Terms with Autism and Asking for Help
There are plenty of wrong preformulated informations about mental disorders brought about by misinformation; autism is just one of the many disorders that have endured its share of misconceptions. Learning bout these misconceptions is important in understanding what autism is. Listed are a few things to guard for about the wrong ideas people have of autism:
- It is not some enchanted disorder that makes your child enormously intellectual in one area and entirely disabled on some aspects. This myth is based on the fact that a minority of autistic people does expand a high level of proficiency on some skills, probably because of their compulsive performance towards things that catch their attention. Then again, these instances are isolated and can be considered exceptions to the rule, as autistic individuals are as a rule average to below average in terms of aptitude on most skills.
- Autistic people are reliant and cannot function normally in life without help from other people. As a matter of fact, autistic children have the potential to become self-reliant, if only they will be given the option to learn how; this is where early intervention is very valuable. The developments in humanistic therapy has made sure that more ways are enriched that are geared towards helping people with special needs cope better with life. - Also one of the most prevalent misconceptions is that autistic children don’t feel emotions towards people which guide to people fearing them because they deduce that if autistic children can’t feel, they won’t be able to feel misfortune or shame. This also could not be farther from the truth because there are many autistic individuals who fall in love, successfully maintain a relationship, and finally get married and get pleasure from a healthy family life. Their inability for social communication inhibits them to effectively relate to other groups of people, especially those in their age group. Autistic children who are in constant interaction with their parents develop a strong bond of love and trust with them.
- Autistic individuals have no division from one another in conditions of indications. One of the major problems in the public school system currently is how to effectively address the needs of autistic children precisely because a roomful of autistic children is a roomful of different personalities and levels of functionalities. The truth is that the only thing common with majority of people who have autism is their difficulty with communicating with people; this is part of the reason why managing an unit made up of several autistic children can be a challenge because of their unique needs.
- Autistic individuals face a challenge in relating to people around them, especially in situations where the environment is new and not something they got at ease with. Since autistic children don’t know how to react to social stimulus, they also typically don’t play with toys the way other children do; the idea of fantasizing and pretending does not occur to them naturally and needs to be taught in a way that they will appreciate. Different games that encourage interaction between the child and toys, and sooner or later connecting the child and other people will be helpful in helping autistic children understand how social interaction performs. With patience and directed effort, parents can employ play therapy to help their child develop into a highly functioning adult.
It’s also very imperative to bear in mind that parents and guardians play a main role in the development of the autistic child’s social communication skills; therapists will usually encourage parents or guardians to join in on their therapy sessions.
