Does anyone watch Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex? What are "ghosts"?
What are "ghosts" in Ghost In The Shell:Stand Alone Complex?
From what I understand "ghosts" are souls, or a person's consciousness. A person's consciousness is connected to a person's soul, so how can they upload a person's soul into a machine? Once a person's dead they are gone. That is witchcraft.
Yes, ghosts are the person's consciousness, a term that in that universe arose from the perceived similarity between someone who is fully-prosthetic and a ghost possessing a body.
As for uploading their ghosts, it's a bit of a stretch, but in theory possible with the level of technology they have. You see, it's estimated that around the year 2025 in real life, the most powerful computer in the world will have enough processing power to be able to simulate all the calculations that a human brain performs at the same speed. But clearly GitS technology is beyond that, with the Tachikoma's being a prime example, and the mass-produced servant andriods seen occasionally as another). And ultimately, humans are "rational animals" and "creatures of habit", so if you can essentially profile the way a person thinks, model an AI routine after it, and upload all that person's memories into that AI routine (which in GitS, virtually everyone has computer-augmented memory built into their heads at a young age, so this would be a simple file-transfer), you could make a copy of a person's psyche that can perform as a "living" facsimile of that person. The amount of processing power and storage space needed to do what is mentioned at the end of 2nd Gig is mind-boggling, but that's just a matter of scale, not on the theory of the base methods.
Given that the Major (and likely most other fully-prosthetics) frequently question whether or not she still qualifies as being alive, or if she is perhaps just an andriod programmed to believe it was once human, really blurs the line at least for them as to whether uploading their consciousness to the net would really be a death at all.
