Shawshank Redemption

What forms of inequality exist in the movie Shawshank Redemption?
I am writing a sociology paper on the movie, and I am wondering if there were any parts where the warden showed disrespect towards the prison guards. I have watched it numerous times, but can't seem to think of any in particular. Also, I am sociologically analyzing the movie from a conflict theory theoretical perspective. Any ideas for that portion too would be helpful.
One of the key concepts in Marx class theory (one of the major versions of conflict theory) is th exploitation of labour
http://uregina.ca/~gingrich/s28f99.htm
One of the key concepts in Webers bureacratic theory of power (another major form of conflict theory) is the power of people in bureacratic postions
http://media.pfeiffer.edu/lridener/dss/weber/weberw7.html
CW Mills a1960s conflcit theorist drew on both Marx and Weber to develop his theory of the Power Elite whom he described as the 1950s/60s ruling class in the USA who comprised a Military Economic Power elite... parallels could well be drawn between this more complex image of the nature of power in the USA during the time line of this story and the militaristic, economic and poltical aspects of the power of the warden as the 'powerful elite man his small world of the prison'
you could put these three sets of theory together to talk about the Prison Warden's exploitation of the prisoners labour - one of the several themes of the film
http://www.ravelli.ca/cwmills.php
for a brief accoont of CW Mills concept
nb Marx also describes the alienation of workers who have no control over their working conditons
Weber talks of the 'estrangement' of people living under heartless bureacratic world of modernityand both Marx and Mills talk of the ways that the exploited class can refuse to give in to the power of the class that exploits them
...so does Gramsci, the Italian Marxist, who categorises the three possible responses of the exploited class to the hegemonic power of those who rule them poltically nd culturallly.
submit to the dominant culture
negotiate the dominant culture
oppose the dominant cultur
http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/research/gramsci/why-gramsci.htmle - there's a lot in the film to exemplify these forms of reaction to the hegemonic power of the prison warden and the prison itself.
so you can also think about drawing these various concepts into your discussion too
good luck

The Shawshank Redemption $17.94 How did a low-key prison movie which was considered a box-office flop on its original release become one of the most popular movies of all time? Mark Kermode, writer and presenter of the acclaimed Channel 4 documentary "Shawshank: The Redeeming Feature, "traces the history of this unexpected audience favorite from the pages of Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, "through the icy corridors of Ohio's Mansfield Reformatory (whose imposing gothic architecture dominates the film), to the television and video screens on which "The Shawshank Redemption "became a phenomenon. Kermode's account draws on extensive interviews with writer/director Frank Darabont and leading players Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The book also explores the near-religious fervour that the film inspires in its huge number of devoted fans. |

The Shawshank Redemption - $19.99 In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton's illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red. Based on a story by Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption was the directorial debut of screenwriter Frank Darabont. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
