Acceptable Loss $13.99 “Give her a good murder and a shameful social evil,” The New York Times Book Review once declared, “and Anne Perry can write a Victorian mystery that would make Dickens’s eyes pop.” And Perry’s new William and Hester Monk story, a mesmerizing masterpiece of innocence and evil on London’s docks, outshines all her previous novels in this successful and beloved series. When the body of a small-time crook named Mickey Parfitt washes up on the tide, no one grieves; far from it. But William Monk, commander of the River Police, is puzzled by the expensive silk cravat used to strangle Parfitt. How did this elegant scarf—whose original owner was obviously a man of substance—end up imbedded in the neck of a wharf rat who richly deserved his sordid end? Dockside informers lead Monk to what may be a partial answer—a floating palace of corruption on the Thames managed by Parfitt, where a captive band of half-starved boys are forced to perform vile acts for men willing to pay a high price for midnight pleasures. Although Monk and his fearless wife, Hester, would prefer to pin a medal on Parfitt’s killer, duty leads them in another direction—to an unresolved crime from the past, to blackmail and more murder, and to a deadly confrontation with some of the empire’s most respected men. To a superlative degree, Acceptable Loss provides colorful characters, a memorable portrait of waterfront life, and a story that achieves its most thrilling moments in a transfixed London courtroom, where Monk faces his old friend Oliver Rathbone in a trial of nearly unbearable tension—in sum, every delectable drop of the rich pleasure that readers expect from an Anne Perry novel. Anti-Catholicism in America: The Last Acceptable Prejudice $19.95 "One of the most important books in religion this year is a tour-de-force of new investigation, scholarly rigor, storytelling, and humor. In this authoritative work, Mark Massa, program director of Fordham University's Center for American Catholic Studies, reveals how American Catholics' distinctive way of viewing the world is constantly misunderstood by outsiders. This book tells the astonishing story of how a supposedly tolerant American culture has prejudged members of their largest religious group, and how the profound differences between Catholics and non-Catholics explain this animosity. Crossroad is pleased to present the paperback edition with major study guide. Chapters include: The Varieties of Anti-Catholicism in the United States; Do Catholics and Protestant See the World Differently? Catholic-Protestant Tensions in Postwar America; The Power of Negative Thinking; The Death Cookie and Other "Catholics Cartoons"; Catholicism and Science; "Why Does He Say Those Awful Things about Catholics?"; Betrayal in Boston; The Last Acceptable Prejudice?" |

Acceptable Sacrifice $8 "What can man bring to God which will be excellent and acceptable in His sight? John Bunyan's answer may surprise us - a broken and contrite heart. This is the 'acceptable sacrifice' of the title. In this moving exposition of Psalm 51:17, the last work which he prepared for the press, Bunyan shows from Scripture why a broken heart is so acceptable to God. He characterizes the unbroken heart of man, showing why it must be made contrite, and explains the nature of the change which is involved. He also guides the reader in discerning whether this change has taken place, and shows how the heart, once broken, can be kept tender." |

Acceptable Evidence $60 Discussions of science and values in risk management have largely focused on how values enter into arguments about risks, that is, issues of acceptable risk. Instead this volume concentrates on how values enter into collecting, interpreting, communicating, and evaluating the evidence of risks, that is, issues of the acceptability of evidence of risk. By focusing on acceptable evidence, this volume avoids two barriers to progress. One barrier assumes that evidence of risk is largely a matter of objective scientific data and therefore uncontroversial. The other assumes that evidence of risk, being "just" a matter of values, is not amenable to reasoned critique. Denying both extremes, this volume argues for a more constructive conclusion: understanding the interrelations of scientific and value issues enables a critical scrutiny of risk assessments and better public deliberation about social choices. The contributors, distinguished philosophers, policy analysts, and natural and social scientists, analyze environmental and medical controversies, and assumptions underlying views about risk assessment and the scientific and statistical models used in risk management. |

Acceptable to God $15.99 "Many struggle with the concept of feeling truly acceptable in Gods sight. They believe He loves them only until they make a mistake; that He is an elusive, vindictive judge waiting to punish them each time they fail. This book deals with overcoming the emotional scarring of the past. It is the deep-seated pain remaining in your memory bank long after the events have occurred. God wants you to gain understanding about yourself from His perspective. He wants you to overcome your past and walk in the fullness of your sacred call. Youll discover it is possible to gain victory over the emotional residue that hinders you. It is possible to still the voices of torment, and learn to live in the freedoms promised to those who call Jesus Christ their Lord. Carol Duhart, a speaker and Bible teacher was born in London. Her earliest writing was shaped by the British school system. After moving to the United States, she pursued writing as a contributor to the local high school newspaper. Carol then spent three years in the military as a photojournalist. She graduated from Bible school in 1994 with honors, and has continued to freelance in the field of writing. Carol has been married for twenty-five years, has two children and lives with her husband in Southern California." |
