The Pacific DVD Set: Just How Real Is It?
When war movies first came out, their purpose was to raise money for the war effort, and boost morale at home.. Although this was the main goal of the films in the 40's, current war films are made for the purpose of entertainment, but many are historically accurate, such as the HBO dvd, "The Pacific."
Due to the more demanding viewership, filmmakers must now make sure that historical accuracy, including using proper weapons, tactics, and uniforms is a high priority in making a war film. Melbourne, Australia was the chosen location for filming non-combat scenes for HBO's "The Pacific" mini-series. The city has many Victorian era structures that were perfect for filming WW2 "home country" scenes. Movie studios were also used to build sets that would have been too costly to modify in real life, or that simply don't exist anymore. The film company chose Flinders Street, one of Melbourne's busiest streets to recreate the scene of thousands of US soldiers and sailors coming to Australia for R & R. Flinders Street was closed for a short period while filming was in progress in the area in an attempt to keep the scene as historically pure as possible.
The battle sequences that are a feature of "The Pacific" dvd set are some of the most impressive that I have seen on film to date. Since it wouldn't be practical to film battle scenes on the islands on which they occurred, HBO producers chose Queensland, a state in tropical North Australia. Locations in Queensland including Port Douglas, Mossman, and Four Mile Beach were transformed into World War II battlefields. These spots are geographically and physically very similar to the places where the battles were fought, including Guadalcanal and Peleliu. The dense, hot, humid jungles of these islands are quite accurately portrayed by the tropical north Australian landscape.
To really make an accurate historical war film, the producers must ensure that all of the weapons, uniforms, aircraft, and equipment are from the right era. Many of these pieces of equipment are not readily available anymore, so a lot of work is required to find them, or even build new ones for the film. International Military Antiques, a US based company, was instrumental in assisting with the research and procurement for "The Pacific." Civilian battle reenactment groups are often called upon to stand in as combat extras portraying other soldiers and airmen in military films.
If you enjoyed "Saving Private Ryan" and "Windtalkers," you are sure to become a fan on the latest WWII epic, the HBO dvd, "The Pacific." The producers of this film have had many previous successes in documenting the war, and "The Pacific" is no exception. Even if you are an historian specializing in the WWII era, you will find that these gentlemen have created a fantastic war film that accurately portrays the people and events of the time.
