King Tut Inspires Dancers to Imitate Ancient Egyptians
If you’re looking for some new moves to impress your mates on the dance floor, take a look back at a blast from the past for a retro revival. Well then you should take inspiration from ancient Egypt and pick up tutting, aptly named after Egypt's most famous pharaoh, King Tut. The moves themselves are a form of another popular dance expression, ‘popping’, which is commonly seen in clubs and the videos of MTV.
Tutting combines gestures of right angle movements that for geometric shapes. It's very easy to learn, all you need is a basic attention and understanding of rhythm. There are plenty of YouTube videos giving how-to directionals if you’re keen on learning the moves. While tutting stay’s true to its nature of popping, the dance has since evolved and now includes much larger full body movements to minuscule little finger movements as well.
Perhaps one of the dance's most famous moments came when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, portrayed the King of Egypt, Tutankhamen. Jackon and a large group of extras did the Tut in his early nineties video for the hit, 'Remember the Time'. However the craze originally started following the opening of the King Tut exhibition at the British Museum in 1972, when popular comedian Steve Martin performed a sketch to the tune ‘King Tut’ in celebration of Tut’s popularity on Saturday Night Live. From the Bangles’ popular song, ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’, to Madonna’s posher form of tutting in her ‘Vogue’ video, the dance has been immortalised by popular culture.
Put on your dancing shoes and start tutting away. It takes very little time to master so you’ll be impressing your friends with your brilliant King Tut inspired moves in no time flat.
