Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players) [VHS] Written, composed, and directed by Indian master Satyajit Ray (Pather Panchali), The Chess Players presents a stylized world in which the landed gentry lounge about, endlessly pulling on hookahs and engaging in the "king of games." Outside their gilded doors, the order that allows them this luxury--let alone their marriages--is crumbling. They couldn't be more oblivious. As the narrator notes, "Mr... |

India with Sanjeev Bhaskar $7.49 Sanjeev Bhaskar, comedian and writer behind 'The Kumars at No. 42' embarks on an epic and highly personal journey through modern India. Sanjeev's characteristic humour and unique take on the country form the heart of this beautifully written travel book that became a Sunday Times bestseller in hardback when it accompanied his BBC series. Sanjeev Bhaskar, comedian and writer of 'The Kumars at No. 42' and 'Goodness Gracious Me' embarks on an epic and uniquely personal journey through the heart of India for his latest BBC2 series, unveiling a country of contradictions and surprises, where ancient and modern collide, and millionaires and beggars live cheek by jowl. As a young British Asian growing up in 1970s west London above his parents' launderette, Sanjeev was fed stories of exotic old India - of cobras and leopards, trapping fireflie and riding in rickshaws. But family visits to the old country revealed stifling heat, mosquitos, powercuts, and the pervasive aroma of cow dung - baffling to a young boy brought up in an England of fish and chips and light drizzle. Now we follow Sanjeev on his adventures through India, where he is reunited with old relatives with traumatic stories of the Partition, but also takes in the shiny new India of state-of-the-art technology and glittering Bollywood. In Bombay, Sanjeev attends a billionaire's party worthy of James Bond, while grinding poverty is a stone's throw away. In Jaipur, he wryly observes the polo-playing Maharajah jet-set, and sees the Ganges lit up by a million candles during the festival of Dawali. His trip sometimes gets a little surreal, as Sanjeev finds himself judging the world's strangest beauty pageant - Mrs India - or plays a sleazy uncle in a Bollywood blockbuster. But we also travel with him to the spiritual heartland of India - Rishikesh, where hippy throwbacks mingle with monks in saffron-coloured robes on the banks of the holy river. In Sanjeev we have the perfect witty and thoughtful travelling companion with a unique take on a remarkable country - an India steeped in history on the brink of superpower status, chaotic and confusing, astonishing and jaw-droppingly beautiful. |

India With Sanjeev Bhaskar $13.79 Exotic and diverse richly colourful and endlessly complex - India is one of the most exciting countries to visit in the world today. Sanjeev Bhaskar of Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42 has visited his Indian relations there over many years but this is his first chance to delve deeper into what makes this country so fascinating perplexing and often challenging to visit. As Sanjeev travels from Delhi to Bombay Jaipur to Calcutta he meets ordinary and extraordinary Indian people from every background and brings his natural warmth and sense of humour to these encounters. Although often baffled by the eccentricities of India our endearingly good-natured guide never fails to find humour in these situations. Sanjeevs India is also a personal journey as Sanjeev meets old relatives who reveal their moving and often traumatic stories of Indians turbulent and bloody past and comes to understand a little more about his own roots. During his trip Sanjeev is invited to a middle-class wedding in Delhi as well as witnessing the poverty of the slums in the Calcutta backstreets. He wryly observes the polo-playing Maharajah jet-set in Jaipur as well as the kitsch of Bombay Bollywood and experiences the Ganges lit up by a million floating candles for the ancient ritual of Diwali as well as the majestic colonial architecture of the British Raj. With such an engaging and thoughtful travelling companion we find ourselves going beyond the clichés to reveal a country steeped in history yet at the forefront of new technology at once confusing astonishing and jaw-droppingly beautiful. |

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle - Widescreen $9.99 Directed by Danny Leiner, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle follows the life-changing (and mind-altering) journey of Korean-American investment banker Harold (John Cho) and Indian-American medical-school candidate Kumar (Kal Penn). Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) have just finished gorging themselves on savory White Castle hamburgers when they return to their apartment and hatch a plan for Harold to win the heart of his crush, Maria (Paula Garc?s). Maria is going to Amsterdam, and if Harold can catch up with her overseas perhaps he can strike up a real love connection. After a close call with airport personnel and a chance encounter with Kumar's ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Danneel Harris) -- who hadn't yet told Kumar that she's engaged to be married -- the pot-loving pals finally board their flight for Amsterdam. Unfortunately for Harold, Kumar isn't able to endure the lengthy flight without an innocent puff or two from his smokeless bong. When the plane hits some turbulence and the bong is mistaken for a bomb, the flight is diverted to Guantanamo Bay and our spliff-smoking heroes are detained by overzealous Deputy Chief of Homeland Security Ron Fox (Rob Corddry). Now, if they can just escape from the world's most notorious prison compound, perhaps this hapless duo can succeed in convincing the authorities that they aren't enemy combatants, and that Kumar made the mistake of his life by letting Vanessa go. But before they can prove their innocence and get the girls, Harold and Kumar will have to outsmart the dreaded Ku Klux Klan, contend with a particularly precocious Cyclops baby, and successfully elude everyone's favorite debauched former child star -- Neil Patrick Harris. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The Chess Players - Fullscreen Subtitle $24.99 Based on a story by Munshi Premchand, and much influenced by Vsevolod Pudovkin's 1925 film Chess Fever, this satirical film by noted Indian director Satyajit Ray is set in colonial India in 1856. The British Resident of the East India Company (Richard Attenborough) has observed that the monarch of Lucknow, which is in his trading region, seems to be completely uninterested in government. He tries to arrange things so that he can annex the province. Embroiled in a long-running chess rivalry, two local noblemen (played by Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey) cannot be bothered with such minor issues as who is governing whom. Meanwhile, conditions in the kingdom go from bad to worse. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi |
