Robin Roberts Dies At 83 Years Of Age

When it came to getting hitters in the hole, Robin Roberts was a master.Free passes were extremely rare when the gentlemanly hurler from Springfield, Illinois, was delivering to the dish.He attacked the strike zone with a fastball Tom Seaver once said appeared to move toward the hitter as if it were "sliding on a sheet of ice," as well as a tumbling slider that many hitters considered the best of his generation.Between the years 1948 and 1966, Robin Roberts notched 286 wins for typically less than stellar squads (save for the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies known as the "Whiz Kids"), and his poise and skill were always apparent to the cheering fans.Today, those cheers have turned into pleas for the days of yore – the great Robin Roberts can no longer take the hill.

USA Today reports that the Philadelphia Phillies have released a statement to the media, announcing that Robin Roberts died of natural causes at his home in Temple Terrace, FL.No indications of ill health had made it to the media, although Roberts was 83 years old.Roberts leaves behind four boys, one brother, seven grandkids and a great-grandson.The loss of Robin Roberts so soon after the death of beloved Philadelphia broadcaster Harry Kalas in 2009 is a great blow to the Phillies extended family.

Through 19 seasons in the sun (14 in Philadelphia), Robin Roberts took control of his games.Roberts' control was a double-edged sword in that it kept hitters from being able to wait out a walk, but it also made him prone to serving up home runs.In fact, the 505 homers he surrendered over the course of his career are more than any pitcher in Major League history.In spite of this, his ultimate command of the strike zone made him a force to be reckoned with.Robin Roberts' place alongside Philadelphia Phillies greats Grover Cleveland Alexander and Steve Carlton is more than secure.Setting aside the glory of the pennant-winning 1950 season, Roberts' best statistical year was 1952, when he led the National League with 28 victories.

According to son Jim Roberts, Robin Roberts never missed a game on TV.The fact that the Phillies made it to the World Series each of the past two seasons (winning in 2008) was a great source of pride for the lifetime Whiz Kid.Giddy exclamations like "Did you see Jimmy (Rollins) make that play?" or "I wish I had Brad (Lidge's) slider!" characterized just how much of the wide-eyed child Robin Roberts never lost.And that wide-eyed young man had a pretty good slider himself.
