This is a very interesting issue and something I spend a lot of time contemplating.
Creative functions are dominantly in the right-brain. I am an artist and while most daily activities are related to left-brain functions, when I draw or paint, my right-brain dominates. It is easy for me to switch sides and the change is amazing and powerful.
Language is where it is most evident. I am not able to form but the most simple verbal communications. I can hear sounds but analysis of the sounds are brief and cursory. I can hear talking, but do not try to listen or understand.
My education and work experience is very left-brain in science and technology and I think that is what makes shifting brain sides so noticeable when it happens.

WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY ADAM COHEN OF THE NEW YORK TIMES. Perhaps Studs Terkel's best-known book, Working is a compelling look at jobs and the people who do them. Consisting of over one hundred interviews with everyone from a gravedigger to a studio head, from a policeman to a piano tuner, this book provides an enduring portrait of people's feelings about their working lives. "A powerful, original, indescribable and incredible book... Only an interviewer of genius, exploiting the tape recorder as hardly anyone else has done, could possibly have brought it forth." —Lewis Mumford. "A magnificent book... a work of art. To read it is to hear America talking." — Boston Globe. "Splendid... Important... Rich and fascinating... The people we meet are not digits in a poll but real people with real names who share their ancedotes, adventures, and aspirations with us." — Business Week. "The talk in Working is good talk--earthy, passionate, honest, sometimes tender, sometimes crisp, juicy as reality, seasoned with experience." — Washington Post. "Nothing could tell our children's children who and how and what we were the way Studs Terkel will. Is it possible the great American novelist is Terkel?" —Murray Kempton

Not Working

Not Working chronicles the devastating effects of the 1996 welfare reform legislation that ended welfare as we know it. For those who now receive public assistance, “work” means pleading with supervisors for full-time hours, juggling ever-changing work schedules, and shuffling between dead-end jobs that leave one physically and psychically exhausted. Through vivid story-telling and pointed analysis, Not Working profiles the day-to-day struggles of Mexican immigrant women in the Los Angeles area, showing the increased vulnerability they face in the welfare office and labor market. The new “work first” policies now enacted impose time limits and mandate work requirements for those receiving public assistance, yet fail to offer real job training or needed childcare options, ultimately causing many families to fall deeper below the poverty line. Not Working shows that the new “welfare-to-work” regime has produced tremendous instability and insecurity for these women and their children. Moreover, the authors argue that the new politics of welfare enable greater infringements of rights and liberty for many of America's most vulnerable and constitute a crucial component of the broader assault on American citizenship. In short, the new welfare is not working.

Working with Walt: Interviews with Disney Artists

Includes interviews with Ken Anderson, Les Clark, Larry Clemmons, Jack Cutting, Don Duckwall, Marcellite Garner, Harper Goff, Floyd Gottfredson, Dick Huemer, Wilfred Jackson, Eric Larson, Clarence Nash, Ken O'Connor, Herb Ryman, Ben Sharpsteen Walt Disney created or supervised the creation of live-action films, television specials, documentaries, toys, merchandise, comic books, and theme parks. His vision, however, manifested itself first and foremost in his animated shorts and feature-length cartoons, which are loved by millions around the world. "Working with Walt: Interviews with Disney Artists" collects revealing conversations with animators, voice actors, and designers who worked extensively with Disney during the heyday of his animation studio. The book includes fifteen interviews with artists who directed segments of such classic animated features as "Dumbo" and "Fantasia." Some interviewed were part of Disney's famed team dubbed "The Nine Old Men of Animation," and some worked closely with Disney on "Steamboat Willie," his first cartoon with sound. Among the subjects the interviewees discuss are the studio's working environment, the high-water mark of animation during Hollywood's Golden Age, and Disney's mixture of childlike charm and hard-nosed business drive. Through these voices, Don Peri preserves an account of the Disney magic from those who worked closely with him. Don Peri of Davis, California, first gained the confidence of Disney insiders through his work with animator, director, and producer Ben Sharpsteen. He has written and published extensively on Walt Disney's productions.

The Studio Reader: On the Space of Artists

The Studio Reader: On the Space of Artists

$22.48

The image of a tortured genius working in near isolation has long dominated our conceptions of the artist's studio. Examples abound: think Jackson Pollock dripping resin on a cicada carcass in his shed in the Hamptons. But times have changed; ever since Andy Warhol declared his art space a "factory," artists have begun to envision themselves as the leaders of production teams, and their sense of what it means to be in the studio has altered just as dramatically as their practices. "The Studio Reader "pulls back the curtain from the art world to reveal the real activities behind artistic production. What does it mean to be in the studio? What is the space of the studio in the artist's practice? How do studios help artists envision their agency and, beyond that, their own lives? This forward-thinking anthology features an all-star array of contributors, ranging from Svetlana Alpers, Bruce Nauman, and Robert Storr to Daniel Buren, Carolee Schneemann, and Buzz Spector, each of whom locates the studio both spatially and conceptually--at the center of an art world that careens across institutions, markets, and disciplines. A companion for anyone engaged with the spectacular sites of art at its making, "The Studio Reader "reconsiders this crucial space as an actual way of being that illuminates our understanding of both artists and the world they inhabit.

"Hailing from the jazz and blues-influenced swamplands of southern Louisiana, New Orleans native Jake Smith delivers both spirit and soul on Real, his major label debut. Musically, the project offers soulful, groove-based pop that sounds reflective of the richness and eclecticism of New Orleans itself. Stylistically in the vein of such popular current artists as John Mayer, Mat Kearney, and Ray LaMontagne, Smith possesses the musical chops to perform convincingly as a solo singer-songwriter, as the leader of a funky acoustic trio or in his favorite light, the frontman to a dynamic band of energetic Louisiana allies. But the strongest stimulus for Smith's songs comes from life itself, the adversities he's experienced and the faith that's brought him hope in the midst of significant turmoil."

Working With Images: The Art of Art Therapists is an effort to give voice to the artist aspect of our identity as art therapists. This book is about how the artists work, how they learned to do it, why they do it. This book will give you glimpses of the memories, and perhaps the scars, of the artists. Be honored. The artists in this book know that it is good to make art and they make good art. Through their work they demonstrate their faith in the product and the process. For some of them, art making is their anchor, in the turbulent world of helping professions. For some, images come in response to their clients. For all of them, making art deepens and enriches their lives. Working With Images: The Art of Art Therapists is a presentation of artworks and contextual essays by professional art therapists. This book is foreworded by Don Siedien and includes an introduction that addresses the structure, rationale and intent of this book. The introduction is followed by the artist-therapists' contributions. Each art therapist's selected artworks are presented on one full page in the text. Immediately following the art piece(s) is a brief biographical sketch, a photo of the art therapist and his or her artistÂ’s statement. From the very beginning of the art therapist profession in the United States there has been steady discussion of the relative importance of the 'artist' aspect of art therapies' professional identity. In the thirty years that the American Art Therapy Association has been in existence there have been few other topics that have generated as much interest and debate at the annual national conference. Over the past several years there has been growing interest in re-igniting our artistic passions and welcoming them back into our professional identity. This movement has been evidenced by a number of conference papers and workshops and professional journal articles focused on examining the integration of the artist and the therapist aspects of our work. Working With Images: The Art of Art Therapists presents art therapists as committed and serious, fine artists. This book will be a significant contribution to the literature, and identity, of the art therapy profession.

Lou Debney, a Disney television producer, discusses the company's engagement with television and live-action film. Walter Lantz talks about his work in the animation business, especially with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. And Dave Hand discusses his legendary work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
