How is it decided that dolphins give birth to calves, and sharks give birth to pups?
How is it decided that some animals (cattle, bison, elephants, dolphins, etc.) give births to calves, others (sharks, rays, seals, rodents, etc.) to pups, and etc.? How is it decided which species holds the title? This has been bothering me for a long time, and I just can't seem to find the answer.
Thanks for trying. It still bothers me that pups are named for no feasible reason.
In English the term "calf" is used by extension for the young of various other large species of mammal. In addition to other cattle (such as bison, yak and water buffalo), these include the young of camels, dolphins, elephants, giraffes, hippopotamuses, larger deer (such as moose, elk (wapiti) and red deer), rhinoceroses, whales and larger seals.
So the classification of that is generally geared toward the larger mammals.
As for pups there isn't really a classification although the majority of animals in that catagory are Canine and others were gradually added on as to what criteria they base it on i don't believe there is any.
