Finding Collectible Coins is Easier Than You May Think
The internet has changed a lot of things about the practice of collecting as a hobby. It is surprising to many novice collectors how many expensive and rare coins are still in loose circulation.
Lincoln wheat cents are an inexpensive but interesting way to get started. These one cent coins were produced between 1909 and 1958 following the successful run of the preceding Indian Head Cent. The name comes from the design of the wheat stalks to appear on the coin back with, of course, a picture of Abraham Lincoln on the front.
A particularly interesting U.S. coin is the zinc/steel penny produced during the Second World War. Because of a copper shortage during the war, the U.S. Mint produced pennies made from steel, then coated with zinc to prevent any rusting. Minted in 1943, they are old enough to be valuable due to age, but have the added rarity of a different alloy. You can tell them apart by their slight bluish gray tine and their distinctive sound when struck.
Many Lincoln wheat cents have the initials VDB of the designer (Victor David Brenner) on the reverse. The Ones that were minted in places other than Philadelphia are worth more, however these can be hard to find due to Philadelphia being the biggest mint at the time and produced a majority of the coins. Some of these pennies fetch up to $700 on the market – not too shabby for a single penny! Many go for $15, still a good profit for a penny.
There are many places that you can find coins. With the growing popularity of coin counting machines, these coins are often passed from bank to bank unnoticed. This is why you should always take a careful look at your change; most people aren't interested in coin collecting, but you have a lot of opportunities as a collector to run across a find!
It only takes a second to casually examine a coin. If you've done your homework in advance, you'll be on the lookout for pre-1964 dimes, VDB pennies and the new state quarters. You may also find Eisenhower silver dollars.
State quarters starting being produced in 1999, with five different ones put into population every year. New quarters are issued ever ten weeks or so; the program is scheduled to end in 2009. All of the new state quarters have a state specific image on the reverse side.
Since the state quarters are only produced in a limited time frame, this will increase their value over the coming years. The value of many of these quarters is already $2, which should increase since a coins circulation lasts about 30 years on average. Start collecting these today and you could find yourself with a very valuable collection in a few decades time.
Coin collecting is a hobby which involves long term planning. Your collection will increase in value over time; this means that even a commonplace coin today could be a valuable collector's item down the road.

On Rare Birds $22.48 In this beautifully illustrated book, Anita Albus recounts the sad histories of several extinct bird species, including the passenger pigeon, the Carolina parakeet, and the great auk. She offers a detailed account of six rare birds: the hermit ibis, the elusive corncrake, the Eurasian nightjar, the barn owl, the northern hawk owl, and the kingfisher. Her unique blend of natural history and investigative reporting weaves together mythological and cultural information and, above all, tells a compelling story. Complemented by Albus's own superb artwork, "On Rare Birds "shows that the extinction of these bird species is a great loss not only to the natural world but also to human culture. This passionate and provocative book will appeal to all those who love birds and care about their survival. Anita Albus is an award-winning writer and artist based in Munich and Burgundy. She is known for her detailed nature paintings as well as for her essays, stories, and writings on art history. Her books include "The Art of Arts, The Botanical Drama, The Garden of Songs, "and "The Botanical" "Spectacle." Her prizes include the Medal of Honor from the Federal Republic of Germany (2001). |

A Rare Chance $3.95 Gabriella Starr has silk suits, champagne tastes, and a great new career. She also has a strange man following her around Boston. Two of them, actually. When she tries to chase down the first, she encounters the second -- ex-cop and new D.A. Cam Yaeger. He's sure she's in trouble, but Gabriella bristles when he offers to help. She's way too attracted to him, and it's not like her to go for law-enforcement types anyway. She's far too independent, too naturally defiant. And she's spent too many nights in jail.... Cam Yeager likes cold beer, his Bruins sweatshirt, and shaving every other day. He knows all about Gabriella Starr, her eccentric father, and their years rescuing rare, endangered orchids no matter the stakes. Now something shady is going on in Boston. And something explosive is hovering on the horizon as well: the wild fireworks of two intense opposites falling in love.... |

Rare Adventures & Painful Peregrinations $25.81 An exciting and unusual book first published in 1632, Rare Adventures and Painful Peregrinations has been a much-ignored masterpiece of global literature, though it is one of the world's great travel tales. Beginning his travels in the Orkney and Shetland Islands of Scotland, Lithgow soon went off to explore the Netherlands, Germany, Bohemia, France, and Italy. He then traveled throughout Greece, Egypt, and Malta before having a spin through Western Europe again and finally returning to Great Britain. Most notably, Lithgow survived torture by the Inquisition in Spain and later traveled throughout his native Scotland. AUTHOR BIO: One of the earliest world explorers and great men of literature, William Lithgow (1582-1645) completed his major work, The Total Discourse of the Rare Adventures and Painful Peregrinations of Long Nineteen Years Travayles in 1632. It was reprinted in 1906. |

The Rare Find $12.99 One of the nation's biggest music labels briefly signed Taylor Swift to a contract but let her go because she didn't seem worth more than $15,000 a year. At least four book publishers passed on the first Harry Potter novel rather than pay J. K. Rowling a $5,000 advance. And the same pattern happens in nearly every business. Anyone who recruits talent faces the same basic challenge, whether we work for a big company, a new start-up, a Hollywood studio, a hospital, or the Green Berets. We all wonder how to tell the really outstanding prospects from the ones who look great on paper but then fail on the job. Or, equally important, how to spot the ones who don't look so good on paper but might still deliver extraordinary performance. Over the past few decades, technology has made recruiting in all fields vastly more sophisticated. Gut instincts have yielded to benchmarks. If we want elaborate dossiers on candidates, we can gather facts (and video) by the gigabyte. And yet the results are just as spotty as they were in the age of the rotary phone. George Anders sought out the world's savviest talent judges to see what they do differently from the rest of us. He reveals how the U.S. Army finds soldiers with the character to be in Special Forces without asking them to fire a single bullet. He takes us to an elite basketball tournament in South Carolina, where the best scouts watch the game in a radically different way from the casual fan. He talks to researchers who are reinventing the process of hiring Fortune 500 CEOs. Drawing on the best advice of these and other talent masters, Anders reveals powerful ideas you can apply to your own hiring. For instance: Don't ignore "the jagged résumé" -people whose background appears to teeter on the edge between success and failure. Such people can do spectacular work in the right settings, where their strengths dramatically outweigh their flaws. Look extra hard for "talent that whispers"- the obscure, out-of-the- way candidates who most scouting systems overlook. Be careful with "talent that shouts" -the spectacular but brash candidates who might have trouble with loyalty, motivation, and team spirit. Each field that Anders explores has its own lingo, customs, and history. But the specific stories fit together into a bigger mosaic. In any field, there's an art to clearing away the clutter and focusing on what matters most. It's not necessarily hard, but it requires the courage to take a different approach in pursuit of the rare find. |
