Tipping Point $6.64 On their sixth album, the Roots backslide a bit on the creative promise they showed with 2002's Phrenology. Instead of expanding into more ambitious and experimental areas--the way Outkast has, for example--the Roots tend to fall back to basics with vigorous, but ultimately conventional, lyricism. There are definitely some truly great moments here: the album opens with near-magic on "Star," a mesm... |

Masterpiece $11.48 4m, 6f / Comedy A one-act about a young artist on a journey to create her one great masterpiece. On the way she learns lessons about life, art, flamingos, playing the tuba, Georgia O'Keefe, really fat ducks, monkeys wearing roller skates, and the joy of coloring outside the lines. A strong ensemble, poetic language, and expressionistic visual elements make Masterpiece perfect for students or adults. Winner of the 2005 Wells Fargo Spotlight on the Arts Award for Excellence. "Just a lovely piece of theatre...We would be remiss if we didn't mention the visual elements, which were just stunning...There are just so many wonderful things about this, but the thing that overrode all the beautiful stuff was its innocence and whimsy." - Minnesota State High School League |

Gatz theatre break $71 James Gatz ? that was really, or at least legally, his name. One morning in the shabby office of a mysterious small business, an employee finds a copy of The Great Gatsby in the clutter on his desk. He starts to read it out loud and doesn't stop. At first his coworkers hardly notice. But after a series of strange coincidences, it's no longer clear whether he's reading the book or the book is transforming him.8 hours long and with a cast of 13, Gatz is by far the New-York-based Elevator Repair Service Theatre Company's most ambitious endeavor yet ? not a retelling of the Gatsby story but an enactment of the novel itself. South Downs and The Browning Version theatre break $62 Following a critically acclaimed and sold out run as part of Chichester's Festival 2011, the double bill of Terence Rattigan's one-act masterpiece and David Hare's specially commissioned companion piece has transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre.Anna Chancellor and Nicholas Farrell once again lead the casts in these plays which examine life in boarding schools. Rattigan's Harrow School and Hare's Lancing College provide the backdrop for two moving and resounding stories, one told through the eyes of a master and the other through the eyes of a boy. Both revolve around unexpected acts of kindness which place the harsh worlds of these schools into stark contrast.South Downs is set at Lancing College in Sussex where a sharp young pupil (a role reprised by young actor Alex Lawther, celebrated for this professional debut) is cut off from the rest of the school by virtue of his own intellect, background and questioning spirit. The school in response presents an unyielding and rigid outlook on life that leaves the boy isolated and confused. In an unlikely meeting with the mother of another pupil, her generosity of spirit and sound advice present the boy with a world of kindness and possibility.Rattigan's The Browning Version presents the retiring Classics master Mr Crocker-Harris, tired, dried up and an abhorred tyrant over his pupils. Stuck in a broken marriage and facing the prospect of a retirement with no money, a simple act of generosity by one of Crocker-Harris' pupils brings out the deep-rooted dignity and heartbreaking sadness that give this play its power. |
