Stem Cells Research?
Im not very informed on this and would like to be. Just under what cinditions are humans tested? Live babies? Live babies in utero?

There are two types of stem cells: embryonic and adult. Through stem cell research, scientists predict that numerous genetic diseases can be cured such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. There is also the possibility of curing paralysis and growing organ's for transplant patients.
Embryonic stem cells are undifferentiated cells and therefore have the potential to become any cell (i.e. muscle, nerve, liver, skin, heart, etc.). Embryonic stem cells can only be gathered from the embryo within the first 10 days after fertilization. (After 10 days, the embryo becomes embedded in the uterine wall and the stem cells begin to differentiate.) Once the embryonic stem cells are harvested, the embryo dies. Embryonic stem cells can also be gathered from the umbilical cord and placenta after birth without killing or harming the baby or mother.
Adult stem cells are partially differentiated. They only have the potential to become only a few cells of the body. They can be gathered from a person at anytime in the person's life without killing or harming the individual. The most common adult stem cells come from the bone marrow. They have the potential to become red blood cells or white blood cells.
The controversy about stem cells is over the use embryonic stem cells that are harvested directly from embryos, not the placenta or umbilical cord. The problem with this procedure is that the baby is killed during the process. The question is: Is it immoral? My belief is that it is immoral. It is unacceptable to murder an innocent human being simply for the "advancement of science." However, the use of embryonic stem cells from the umbilical cord and placenta are acceptable. Adult stem cell research is also acceptable.
