Medical Center Gives Rural Nurses Chance To Use Skills
The nursing staff of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital (in Ulysses), now has the option to experience the latest in nursing at the Medical Center of University of Kansas. They have introduced a program, whereby the nurses that work in rural hospitals, can now work for a short period at the city hospital too. Not only does the program, give these nurses a chance to work with unfamiliar cases; but also compensates the staff requirement of the medical center; that is short of the same.
The Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital is so far the only one enrolled. It has about 26 nurses in all, of which 12 decided to participate. All the nurses, including a 35 year old, who are worked in Ulysses for almost 5 years, looked forward to it with excitement. In Kansas City, being assigned the hematology department she usually handled the kidney, bone marrow and liver patients. Nurses are flown to Kansas City on the medical center's outreach plane during its scheduled stops to western Kansas, and are housed at the medical center.
According to the administrator of the Ulysses hospital, the program has much potential for nursing staff in the surrounding areas. This program is a lifetime opportunity to get the best experience at nursing by working with state of the art equipment at the tertiary care level.
He further added that he hopes that through the participating nurses, their entire staff will be enlightened; facilitating an overall improvement in patient care. This knowledge proves to be a big asset to the hospital. The program has been designed to serve a dual purpose, as per the director of the center. While filling the shortage at the medical center, it also provides the deserving nurses a chance to improve their skills and get proper work. And these nurses have actually adapted quite well. She said that they provide some instruction, but they are good practitioners and good workers. They were well received by the staff. The doctors go out to the western Kansas to conduct educational seminars which would not be possible without the seven passenger outreach plane.
The medical center offers part time work to the nurses who frequently drive to Kansas City from Manhattan, Fort Scott, Paola and Topeka. On its return trips, the plane provides a ride to two to three nurses at a time. The trips are definitely worth all the effort and preparation that go into it, says a passenger.
But this does not stop the nurses from thinking ahead into the future. The nurse who has two daughters is sympathetic of her and hence they give her opportunity to improve her skills. She feels that will hopefully learn a lot, come back home and put all that to use.
