Johnny Guitar

Out on the high seas- our love of pirates
Most recent we've seen pirates seeming to crop up in the new alot. Be it actual piracy taking place in the oceans, the popular 'file sharing' network pirate bay's owners being found guilty over copyright laws. For whatever reason we seem to be experiencing a bizarre pirate craze, where most people seem to want to walk the plank and find the gold. So what exactly has caused this 'pirate love fest'?
The pirates of the Caribbean movies can be 'blamed' for kicking it off, with Johnny Depp and co capturing the imagination of a time of excitment and swords (and parrots). Seeing as POTC was a Disney movie alongs comes the masses of merchandise they like to crank out with any film. 'Pirate metal' has appeared, the band Alestorm seeming to find the right mix of heavy guitar and pirate vocals to bring a new musical subgenre to the forefront, which has only hightened peoples love of pirates. Theres also an obsession online about the fight to end all fights: Pirates vs zombies vs ninjas, as if any of these groups could actually get together for it. Does our need for escapism from our current situation of our lives actually help bring forth this obbession? Most people work in boring day jobs, dreaming of something more exciting, such as life on the high seas, drinking rum all day and boarding other ships, and as the economy gets worse, people feel the need to further vanish into fantasy. Given a choice, i think many people would turn their back on reality, living a life of gold chasing and terror on the high seas.
So what was it really like, rather than the romantic notion we all have of piracy back then? Life at sea would often see the food going rotten and moldy, limbs amputated with painkillers from wounds substained in battle. Lashes with a 'cat of nine tails' is alot more painful than it sounds. So dubbed for its nine ends, causing much damage do a mans back when flogged.
Does a sailing weekend or a treasure hunt in London now appeal to ye still?

Essential Willie Nelson $11.23 With 41 tracks drawn from nine record labels, the two-disc Essential Willie Nelson is impressive in its breadth. Disc one is simply superb; it begins with 1961's "Night Life," recorded for the obscure Bellaire label, and moves on to several of Nelson's early 1960s Liberty recordings, an overlooked gem recorded for Monument in 1964 ("I Never Cared for You"), a cherry-picked selection of his RCA and... |

Blue $5.22 Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astoni... |

Johnny Guitar - $19.99 One of the strangest westerns on record, Johnny Guitar has less in common with Zane Grey than it does with Sigmund Freud and Krafft-Ebbing. The title character, played by Sterling Hayden, is a guitar-strumming drifter who was once the lover of Arizona saloon-owner Vienna (Joan Crawford). Though her establishment doesn't make a dime, Vienna doesn't care because the railroad is going to come in soon, bringing a whole slew of thirsty new customers. This puts her at odds with bulldyke rancher Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge), who doesn't want any new settlers on her land. Hating Vienna with a purple passion, Emma will do anything to drive her out of the territory...and even worse, Emma's got the law and the other ranchers on her side. Hoping to keep Emma at bay, Vienna hires Johnny Guitar, who unbeknownst to everyone else in town is a notorious gunslinger. But Johnny prefers to bide his time, waiting for Emma to strike before he makes his move. As a result, Vienna endures several life-threatening experiences, culminating with a feverish chase through the Arizona wilds with lynch-happy Emma and her minions in hot pursuit. According to most sources, the animosity between Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge was quite real, added several extra dimensions to their scenes together. Director Nicholas Ray and screenwriter Philip Yordan stuff the film with so much sexual symbolism that one wonders why they left out a train going into a tunnel. Ms. Crawford's vivid red-and-blue wardrobe scheme was later appropriated by Ray for James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause--with equally stunning results. In addition to the stars, Johnny Guitar is well stocked with reliable supporting players, including Ernest Borgnine, Ben Cooper, Royal Dano (superb as a consumptive, book-reading hired gun) and Paul Fix. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
