Learn To Speak Italian – Where To Start For Beginners

Learning to speak Italian (or any language in fact) is a great way to better yourself. The things you learn will not only relate to speaking Italian but will develop your general knowledge and your knowldge of your mother tongue. For example, your English grammar will improve if you learn Italian grammar. This could improve your ability to write better prose or even give presentations.

Learning another language will give you new insights on your own culture as you will be learning Italian cultural references that will give you a perspective on your own country and background. It might sound like a cliche but you will be more interesting to other people. Most people want to be popular or liked by others and learning to speak Italian and becoming fluent can make this desire a reality. Other than that, speaking Italian could help you in a career or get a better job depending on the industry you work in or where you live.

So what is the first thing to do if you are beginning to learn to speak Italian ?

First things first. How fast do you want to learn Italian ? The obvious answer is as soon as possible, but remember that it should fit into your lifestyle and the best way you learn new stuff. Putting unrealistic objectives on your shoulders will only weigh you down and may ultimately mitigate you giving up learning the language altogether.

If you are relentlessly determined to learn to speak Italian then I would say go to Italy and take an intensive, immersion course and live there for a few months, but you'd need plenty of free time and few responsibilities. Then spend a bit more time in Italy. You could even do some simple jobs there too. If you do all these things I would say you will have a good understanding of the language within 6 months to a year. You'll certainly be able to chat confidently and understand what is going on.

Unfortunately, most people don't have this luxury. They have a time sapping job or have to care for their family. They simply don't have the opportunity to dedicate all their time to learning the language.

If this sounds like you then you need to organize your time and structure your learning so that you are working smarter rather than harder. Set up a study routine. Determine a given day and time when all your concentration is set to learning Italian. No distractions or other things to do. Pure focus on the task.

Investigate local classes or for the more time poor out there, a home study course that can serve as your focal point when it comes to your education. As you get further into the course the lessons will get easier and your concentration on the language or lesson will get stronger.

This material is where you should focus all your attention. You should spend most of the time you set aside to learning to speak Italian on this material but you can use other methods as you get more experienced. You will be able to use different and more enjoyable techniques to learn Italian. For instance you could watch Italian films. This will help you in many ways like vocabulary or grammar construction. But it will be enjoyable too and not like a lesson. Once you get to this stage, learning Italian will stop being a chore and will just be another aspect of your life. This is when you really start to learn the language.
