Great Horror Classics
Horror Classics By Great Authors
When people think of authors that have written horror classics through the years, they usually think of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, McCammon, and perhaps a couple of others. A lot of these writers are certainly the best selling of the bunch but by no means the entire spectrum. The horror genre has grown to be even more well-liked through the years given that Stephen King first wrote his best-selling novel “Carrie”, the 1 book that did greater than any other to push the limitations of terrifying literature in the twentieth century. After that emerged a multitude of copycat authors, Koontz included, and even Stephen King himself started to be fairly stuck in the genre, despite his recurring tries later on in life to break out.
Horror classics may be the most challenging kind of books to create because of the expansion of horror motion pictures, the majority of people think they're jaded. Since most people these days do not read but rather wait for the motion picture (which is a huge mistake because only one book out of many gets made into a movie) they don't know all the heart stopping chills they're missing out on. Great horror classics in literature form are much more frightening than their celluloid (or digital) knock-offs. Very few fantastic horror films have been made out of excellent horror books but the greatest of the gang are “The Exorcist” (original book written by William Peter Blatty), “Carrie” (Stephen King), and “The Shining” (King again).
One of the best books ever written and of the real modern horror classics is “Song of Kali” by Dan Simmons. Released in 1985, Song of Kali tells the tale of a poetry editor who visits Calcutta along with his spouse and baby girl in order to find some poetry left behind by a supposedly deceased poet. What he discovers is a dirty, awful, criminally mad town that holds deep mysteries, crazed cults, and supernatural terrors far beyond anything he could ever have imagined. Read through this one with the light on.
“Carrie” by Stephen King remains to be widely regarded as the author’s best and one of the everlasting horror classics of the last hundred years. King’s capability to change the ordinary, in this case the story of a nerdy, introverted lady being bullied in high school, into a fascinating story of the supernatural is awesome and sheer genius. The fantastic characters that fill Carrie, which includes her faith crazed mother, are very memorable and you will never forget the ending. Even though film was excellent, the book is much better, as they usually are.
Some other terror classics include “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by the late, wonderful Ray Bradbury who is also known for his science fiction than his startling horror, and “Ghost Story” by Peter Straub. Both are wonderful books and you must not miss them. Another great writer of horror classics is Ramsay Campbell and his fantastic book “The Hungry Moon” will certainly leave you howling. “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson was turned into a hit Hollywood film but again the book is much better. These are just some of the horror classics made into movies, of which some are shot in green screen studios making use of green screen backgrounds.

Horror Classics 8 - $12.99 Includes:Dead Men Walk (1943) The Monster Maker (1944) Dead Men Walk This painfully cheap but wildly entertaining PRC production stars a hammy George Zucco in a dual role as the Clayton Twins -- both doctors, one good, one evil. Elwyn Clayton, a practitioner of the black arts, is murdered by his brother Lloyd and returns from the dead as a vampire to seek revenge with the aid of his leering, hunchbacked assistant (Dwight Frye -- who else?). He exacts his vengeance by brutally murdering Elwyn's associates, with all evidence pointing to the only living twin. Jungle Siren director Sam Newfield makes the most of the paltry budget, helped greatly by Zucco's typically flamboyant performance -- which threatens to out-camp even that of legendary eye-roller Frye (who would die of a heart attack some months after this film's completion). ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi The Monster Maker The disfiguring disease of acromegaly-which grotesquely extends the bones and distorts one's facial features-was the "gimmick" in the PRC horror opus The Monster Maker. J. Carroll Naish stars as Markoff, a mad doctor who has no qualms about experimenting on human beings. Markoff's unwitting victim is famed concert pianist Lawrence (Ralph Morgan), who is injected with the doctor's acromegaly-inducing serum. It is Markoff's intention to extort a great deal of money from Lawrence before providing an antidote-and also to win the hand of Lawrence's pretty daughter Patricia (Wanda McKay). Though the film is as lumpy and unconvincing as Lawrence's rubbery facial makeup, the flawless performances of those old barnstormers J. Carroll Naish and Ralph Morgan carry the day. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Horror Classics, Vol. 9 - $4.99 Includes:Dead Men Walk (1943) The Terror (1963), MPAA Rating: R Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride (1973), MPAA Rating: R Mutant (1983), MPAA Rating: R Dead Men Walk This painfully cheap but wildly entertaining PRC production stars a hammy George Zucco in a dual role as the Clayton Twins -- both doctors, one good, one evil. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi The Terror In this horror chiller, an intriguing, beautiful woman (Sandra Knight) keeps re-appearing to early 19th-century Lt. Duvalier (Jack Nicholson), and he is led to a castle where he finds an imposter of Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff). He becomes trapped in the ancient castle and tries to make sense of the eerie situation. Director Roger Corman (with the help of a few other directors, including Francis Ford Coppola) shot most of this within a few days after finishing The Raven--utilizing the same set. ~ Kristie Hassen, Rovi Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride The final installment in Hammer Studios' Dracula series is also the least interesting of the lot. A fairly direct follow-up to Dracula A.D. 1972, this sequel finds the Count (Christopher Lee) developing a potent strain of bubonic plague which he and his devil-worshipping disciples plan to release from 1970's London to wipe out nearly all life on earth. His efforts are challenged once again by the dedicated Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing), leading to a rather uninvolving climax. Despite the always-welcome presence of Lee and Cushing, this installment plays too flagrantly with the time-honored Hammer Gothic formula, giving Dracula actual dialogue and surrounding the leads with a dull, amateurish supporting cast -- with the possible exception of Joanna Lumley (later of BBC-TV's Absolutely Fabulous). This also marked Lee's final performance as the Count and signaled the beginning of the end for Hammer's horror heyday. Also known as Satanic Rites of Dracula and Dracula is Dead and Well and Living in London. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi Mutant A muscular pair of Yankee brothers visit a backwater Georgia town and end up involved with rednecked mutant zombies. The campy horror begins when brother Mike suddenly disappears. Puzzled brother Josh, with the help of Sheriff Will Stewart and schoolmarm Holly begin a desperate search. Unfortunately more trouble ensues when they find that toxic waste has transformed their normally peaceable neighbors into scary monst |
