What Ever Happened To The VCR?
Not long ago, the grace the living rooms of millions of people. They make life easier and more fun. You can record your favorite TV programs and watch them whenever you want to. Video rental stores spring up over night. They are a big sensation. Video tapes become a part of everyday life. Many crimes and funny moments are now forever caught on this amazing medium. However, something has happened to the VCR. It is going extinct.
Modern technology has brought about the extinction of many items. Some seem to be immune to this phenomenon. For example, you can still see an electric hand mixer in most kitchens today. These items seemed to have withstood the test of time. Why has the VCR not been so lucky?
In most cases, it is due to being replaced. Something bigger, faster, or more efficient takes over. The DVD has slowly taken the place of the VCR. DVD movies do not have to be rewound. You can easily mail them across the world.
A few appliances seem to defy the law of evolution. The hand blender fit into this category. It starts out as very popular. It disappears, and then resurfaces. It becomes popular again.
Some handy kitchen items are replaced by mechanized ones. However, some manage to survive. Manual can openers are perfect examples. These simple yet effective tools are still in millions of kitchens. This is true in spite of all the electric can openers. Is it their durability and reliability that keeps them in demand?
Some appliances reach a certain point in their evolution and stall. Look at the countertop microwave. There have been some basic improvements like turntables. They make ones with convection options. Some will fit over your range. However, they are still the same item. Their price is much cheaper. Nothing seems to have replaced their basic function.
The VCR does have its pitfalls. This may be the reason for its demise. These items can be difficult, at times. You must be careful or you may get a tape stuck in the unit. Sometimes they can be hard to hook up to your TV. They can be difficult to program, also.
Summary
The VCR is handy invention that may have seen its better day. Modern technology is bringing about its extinction. Fortunately there are still some items that seem immune to this type of fate. Enjoy them while you can.
