Full Screen Version
Playing "full frame" DVDs on widescreen TV?
My son loves Kung Fu Panda, so i got it for x-mas. When I bought it, we didn't have a wide screen TV. Most DVDs have both options, but this one was labled as one or the other. I bought the "full frame" version, which was $5 less. For x-mas, we ended up gettting a huge wide screen TV. I don't have the receipt for the DVD, we have not opend it yet. What will the full screen version look like on our wide screen Tv? Or is it worth the hassle to try and return it and pay the extra $5 for the wide screen version?
With the TV set to Normal, the DVD image should come out with black bars on either side of the image.
Purchasing the widescreen version of the movie will allow you to see the theatrical image. To produce the full frame version, the DVD producers used a technique called pan and scan to put the essential image into the 4:3 TV image area. So there are some parts of the theatrical image that were left out of the full frame version.
This is more subjective than anything else, but I figure the director had some reason for putting certain images on the edges of the widescreen version, so I've always purchased widescreen versions of DVDs, even if the image on my TV looks smaller, complete with black bars on top and bottom.
