Fight Club

What are examples of post modern themes in the movie Fight Club?
i have to write an essay on post modern themes that are depicted in fight club. The themes that i want to talk about are isolation, existentialism and the idea that there is no one version/ truth. I need lots of examples for each one including quotes if possible. Thanks!
"You are not a beautiful, unique snowflake. You are not special."
Drones Tyler Durst over a megaphone to his growing cult of socially dissatisfied and frustrated followers.
The major theme of that movie (imo) was the rejection of socially acceptable and sanitized comforts. In fact the revulsion of those norms. Like a obese man overstuffed on artificial sweetener chuck palahniuk's characters seemed to be vomiting up years of blindly digested dogma.
Comforts such as Ikea furniture, Starbucks coffee or even central AC became a superficial tomb that drove his main character so deep into solitude and loneliness that he eventually suffered a full multiple personality schizophrenic break with reality. This break manifested in the alter ego character who shamelessly and un-apologetically destroyed the walls of that tomb figuratively and literally. Interestingly the alter ego was not satisfied with destroying his own walls of domestic melancholy. And began recruiting followers to eventually take their solution international.
Existensialism is (i think) the study of one's self from a conceptually abstract yet completely internal point of view. A certain dignity and wisdom may be discovered by such a journey. The excesses of modern life seemingly threaten the awareness that such a thing even exists by stuffing the human ego with illusions and baseless pointless information.
Priorities such as: who won the game, does my belt match my shoes, what country is this wine from - have taken presedence over the great philisophical challenges of our time. Fight Club to me indicates this as a tragedy and follows the Thoreau prescription for finding your center. Rejecting conveniences and consumer dogma... Simplify, simplify, etc..
I scanned through the script to find choice quotes..
You may decide for yourself what is relevant among them:
Ed:
When people think you're dying,
they listen to you instead of...
Marla:
Instead of waiting for their turn to speak.
----------------------------------------------------------
Ed:
I couldn't sleep.
With insomnia, nothing's real.
Everything's far away.
Everything's a copy of a copy
of a copy.
When deep space exploration ramps up,
it'll be the corporations that name everything.
The IBM Stellar Sphere.
The Microsoft Galaxy.
The Planet Starbucks.
-----------------------------------------
Tyler:
No fear. No distractions.
The ability to let that which does not matter
truly slide.
You are not your job.
You're not how much money
you have in the bank.
You're not the car you drive.
You're not the contents of your wallet.
You're not your fucking khakis.
You are the all-singing,
all-dancing crap of the world.
----------------------------------------------
Ed:
Every time the plane banked too sharply
on takeoff or landing,
I prayed for a crash or a midair collision.
Anything.
----------------------------------------------
Tyler:
Right. We're consumers.
We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession.
Murder, crime, poverty.
These things don't concern me.
What concerns me are celebrity magazines,
television with channels,
some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine.
Viagra. Olestra.
--------------------------------------------
Ed:
When you buy furniture,
you tell yourself, that's it.
That's the last sofa I'll need.
Whatever happens,
that sofa problem is handled.
I had it all.
I had a stereo that was very decent.
A wardrobe that was getting very respectable.
I was close to being complete.
- Shit, man. Now it's all gone.
- All gone.
-----------------------------------------------
Ed:
I'd be very, very careful
who you talk to about that.
Because the person who wrote that
is dangerous.
And this button-down, Oxford-cloth psycho
might just snap and then stalk from office to office
with an Armalite AR carbine gas-powered
semiautomatic weapon,pumping round after round
into colleagues and co-workers.
This might be someone
you've known for years.
Someone very, very close to you.
---------------------------------------------
Tyler:
Slaves with white collars.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes.
Working jobs we hate
so we can buy shit we don't need.
We're the middle children of history.
No purpose or place.
We have no Great War.
No Great Depression.
Our great war is a spiritual war.
Our great depression is our lives.
We've all been raised
on television to believe that one day we'd be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars.
But we won't.
We're slowly learning that fact.
And we're very, very pissed off.
-----------------------------------------------
Tyler:
The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club.
The second rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club!

Fight Club: A Novel $10.19 Chuck Palahniuk's outrageous and startling debut novel that exploded American literature and spawned a movement. Every weekend, in the basements and parking lots of bars across the country, young men with white-collar jobs and failed lives take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded just as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter, and dark, anarchic genius, and it's only the beginning of his plans for violent revenge on an empty consumer-culture world. The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club. |

Fight Club - Widescreen $14.99 In this darkly comic drama, Edward Norton stars as a depressed young man (named in the credits only as "Narrator") who has become a small cog in the world of big business. He doesn't like his work and gets no sense of reward from it, attempting instead to drown his sorrows by putting together the "perfect" apartment. He can't sleep and feels alienated from the world at large; he's become so desperate to relate to others that he's taken to visiting support groups for patients with terminal diseases so that he'll have people to talk to. One day on a business flight, he discovers Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charming iconoclast who sells soap. Tyler doesn't put much stock in the materialistic world, and he believes that one can learn a great deal through pain, misfortune, and chaos. Tyler cheerfully challenges his new friend to a fight. Our Narrator finds that bare-knuckle brawling makes him feel more alive than he has in years, and soon the two become friends and roommates, meeting informally to fight once a week. As more men join in, the "fight club" becomes an underground sensation, even though it's a closely guarded secret among the participants. (First rule: Don't talk about fight club. Second rule: Don't talk about fight club.) But as our Narrator and Tyler bond through violence, a strange situation becomes more complicated when Tyler becomes involved with Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), whom our Narrator became infatuated with when they were both crashing the support-group circuit. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club was directed by David Fincher, who previously directed Pitt in the thriller Seven. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
