Relive The Animation Heydays With Tom And Jerry Movies

Everyone enjoys kids cartoon movies, even the adults that buy them for their children; they make up a big part of our childhood years and I’m sure you have your favorite shows. For anyone who grew up between the 60’s and 80’s you’ll be familiar with the creations of William Hanna and Joseph Barbara, they invented the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Yogi bear and probably the most well known cartoon of all time Tom and Jerry.

No one really knows why this cartoon short is so well received, but it could be to do with the easily understandable slapstick humor that they use through out; anyone can understand what is going on. The show is one of the longest running cartoons ever to be made and has been on air since 1940; during the IRA bombings in London the main TV station had to close down transmission and evacuate its employees from the building, it was decided that Tom and Jerry should be played during this down time. This was so successful at raising people’s spirits that every time the TV station went down Tom and Jerry was always put on in place of regular programs.

Not many people know that these hilarious kids cartoon movies were created by several directors in its time, after the original makers MGM hired an eccentric Czech director named Gene Dietsch whose surreal ideas proved too much for the regular Tom and Jerry audience. After just 3 years he was replaced by the well known Chuck Jones, who continued the series until its end. These days you can find Tom and Jerry DVD box sets filled with episodes created by your favorite director, for example if you watched the series during the 60’s then you would probably have been watching a Chuck Jones episode.

So where did it all begin? Most people don’t realize that Tom and Jerry has had more than one creator in over 50 years of air time; the original two were the talented William Hanna and Joseph Barbara. They came to the MGM studios in the 40’s with their idea and Tom and Jerry became a reality in people’s homes. After a short time the show was cut and the team split up until the 1960’s when MGM decided to restart the project, they hired Gene Deitch for 2 years, but his eccentric creativity didn’t mix well with the show. In 1963 the studios hired a new director Chuck Jones who became the next creator of the Tom and Jerry movies.

If you want to relive the heydays of the original Tom and Jerry animated shorts these days it’s as simple as going online and ordering from the various Tom and Jerry spotlight collection sets, which are packed with shows going all the way back to the first episodes. An example of a particularly good film is the Tom and Jerry magic ring which came out in 2002, it was written and directed by both of the original creators and also collaborated on by Chuck Jones. If you’re an enthusiast of the lovable cat and mouse duo then you’ll love this film, it would also be a great introduction to the characters for your own kids.

Alternatively the feature length Tom and Jerry movie have won a total of 7 Oscar awards and are quite different from the television shorts. A DVD of one of the latest films from this lovable duo would make the ideal birthday gift for your child or one of their friends.
