Independent Film Making Is Facing A Bumpy Road
Hollywood has had a stranglehold on movie making using green screen and green screen background since the early 20th century but ever since the late 60's more and more mavericks have taken independent film making to bigger heights. Motion pictures like “Putney Swope” and “The Graduate” were ground breaking when they were first introduced and made the way for generations to come of independent film making students and directors. Who can forget the younger, fresh-faced Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate”? This film not just introduced us to Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft but in addition introduced us the great track from Simon and Garfunkel “Mrs. Robinson.” Many of us also got a chance to see a young celebrity known as Jon Voight play a lost and lonesome character in “Midnight Cowboy.” These are motion pictures that Hollywood was simply incapable of making back in the 1960's. It took quite a few movie rebels to take independent film making techniques and make these motion pictures then fight for them until they got widespread distribution.
Distribution remains the key to getting any kind of flick observed by viewers at theatres, though the ways of distribution are changing. Worldwide distribution is still managed basically by the major Hollywood studios. They've locked up deals with all of the top theater chains everywhere. That's the reason you always see studio motion pictures actively playing at the local multiplex and rarely any kind of independent offerings except at small art house cinemas in big cities. Regardless if independent film making leads to an excellent flick, the distributors are often the art house subsidiaries of the big studios including Fox Searchlight.
Some other art house subs have disappeared as soon as Paramount closed Paramount Vantage, or when Time Warner closed Warner Independent. The global financial difficulty is felt very strongly by indie film makers everywhere as the crisis of indie distributors persists. Only 11 independent film distributors stay from the 38 official “front end” art house affiliates of the majors since 2007. There are still a number of die hards like Think Films but some are in free fall and will vanish except if something radical takes place soon.
During the past few years independent film making has had a few major successes. When “Slumdog Millionaire” gained Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards it came as a shock, although not a complete shock. Other independent movies had made the way for this in the preceding years. Flicks like “The English Patient”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Sideways” and many others. “The Blair Witch Project” was a very good illustration of prosperous independent film making gone right. New Line picked it up at 1 of the movie festivals and that film which was produced on a small funds continued to produce hundreds of millions of dollars in international profits.
Independent film making nowadays faces its most difficult task ever in the face of the financial problems in the world. We're at risk of losing this much needed business and people need to get out and support independent film making by spending to see these films when they come to cinemas.
