VIDEO/DVD: STLJN Saturday Video Showcase: A Greg Osby Sampler (All About Jazz)
This week, let's check out some clips of saxophonist, composer and St. Louis
native Greg Osby, who will be returning home to play Wednesday, December 14
through Saturday, December 17 at Jazz at the Bistro. Osby, 51, first left St.
Louis in 1978 to study at Howard University, and later Berklee College of
Music. He began gaining recognition in the 1980s through his work with veteran
leaders such as drummer Jack DeJohnette, pianist Andrew Hill, and others, as
well as with peers including saxophonist Steve Coleman and others in the
M-Base Collective. Osby launched his career as a solo recording artist in
1987, and since then has created a substantial body of original music-17 CDs
worth—exploring different concepts and using various instrumental

However, Coach Strobel presents a move that is low risk and provides a high percentage of success - the High Single. In this demonstration clinic presentation, Strobel breaks down the High Single to insure that your wrestlers will understand its every nuance. He begins with proper positioning, explaining everything from the grip to level change. From there he covers counter offense, showing how to score with the High Single if the opponent hooks a Collar Tie, 2-on-1, or Underhook. He closes with finishes, the most important aspect of the move. Strobel demonstrates a number of different finishes with his leg on the inside, trapped in the middle, or on the outside. He begins with cradles starting with the nearside cradle. Strobel shows proper technique for the breakdown, ride and lock for each cradle. All of his cradles start with the blanket ride. From the nearside Strobel demonstrates five different finishes, including his unique twist to the chest-to-chest finish. Next, Strobel cover the farside cradle cover six finishes from it. The second half of the tape concentrates on arm bars. He begins by breaking down four different ways to secure an arm bar, and then moves into five different finishes. He begins with set-ups, focusing on control ties and being able to move the opponent where you need him on the mat. Among the set-ups Strobel shows include inside wrist control, underhooks, the 2-on-1 and how to beat the collar tie. Using these control ties, Strobel flows into single and double finishes. He demonstrates seven different finishes - including his favorite High Inside Single technique. In addition, he shows at least two variations for each technique. Strobel closes the presentation with counter offense technique - including ways to "beat the funk." Strobel's philosophy centers around "I attack, I score .
