When it comes to working with metal there are lots and lots of tools that you need to get almost any job done. When you’re in a machine shop you’re likely to see lots of tools that you would never see anywhere else. You may not know what all of them are, but some of them will be a little familiar. You might not know quite so much though about disc cutters. These are very specialized tools that you really don’t see too many people buying for use in their private homes.
You might not expect it, but you would quite likely to see disc cutters at a jewelry making shop if you looked. This is because this tool can really be useful in jewelry making. While this may not make lots of sense at first, it really is quite a great tool for this type of use. When jewelry is being made then there are lots of shapes that are needed and when they need the variety this is a great way to get it.

This is a two piece tool and you must have both pieces to make it work. First there's the die part of the tool that will be the shape you want to have cut out. The other part of the tool is the punch part of the tool that you need to have also. The dies can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In some cases too you may see something called a drill press, which is a much larger version of a disc cutter.
When you're using this tool, what you are doing is placing some soft metal over the die and then using the punch to punch out the shape. This will create the small, or whatever size, metal disc that you are looking for. The person that creates the disc will probably have a project in mind that they will use the discs for.
Once you begin using the tool you will probably find more places and applications for the discs that it creates.
