Dario Argento
Dario Argento fans? What movies should I see from him? What should I avoid?
I know he has done about 10 15 movies, which ones are good and which ones are bad. Let me know as many as you can in either category. I saw Suspiria and loved it!
What about the Church, Tenebre, Opera, Phenomonia, Jenifer, Demons 1,2,3 and Unsane?

Those are my favorites. Suspiria and Inferno are part of his "Mothers" trilogy which concluded with Mother of Tears. They are more supernatural type things.
He is really famous for his slasher/murder/mystery/thriller movies like Deep Red and Bird w/ the... or Opera. Very "Hitchcockian."
Honestly there aren't any movies he made that are so bad to be avoided, but like every other artist his early work is better.
If you watch a few and you like them you might delve into the career of Mario Bava.
edit: Opera and Tenebrae are great. Both are solid giallo films, but I still like his earlier stuff better. Phenomena is more on the supernatural side. It's not bad, but not his best.
I have not seen Jennifer or Unsane.
Demons was written by Argento, but was actually directed by Mario Bava's son Lamberto Bava. It is totally awesome, but not really in the same way as an Argento film. In his movies, even the bloodiest ones, it's the suspense and atmosphere that make the movies so great. His use of color to effect the mood of a scene is widely revered. Demons on the other hand is a straight up gore fest. One of the best "transformation" scenes ever. I would say there is some definite Argento influence in Demons though. Especially in regards to the lighting and color. Compare Demons to Suspiria.
And The Church was directed by Argento protege Michele Soavi(he's the guy passing out the tickets in Demons.) I'm so proud of you for mentioning this movie. It is one of my favorites. Definitely has a heavy Argento influence. The story gets a little disjointed towards the middle, but it works to great effect. Very surreal. Soavi made another movie I'm a huge fan of called Cemetery Man. It's a really interestingly different take on a zombie film. Very surreal/dark humor.
Man if you really like some of this stuff you should definitely check out 3 films from a guy named Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Santa Sangre
Santa Sangre is the only one that is actually a horror movie, but none of them will disappoint. I can't recommend the first 2 enough. By and far the craziest films I've ever seen.
Also a movie I discovered about a year ago called Born of Fire. It's directed by a guy named Jamil Dehlavi. Much of it was filmed in Turkey and there is some really cool scenery in this one. It has a very similar feel to Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain. A stronger horror element, but similar in it's spiritualism and again (the common theme with all these movies) it's surrealism.
