Number Of American Women Pursuing Medical Careers Increase
Recent studies reveal that more American women are getting into the medical profession than ever before, a move that could bring drastic changes to the practice as a whole. For many years there have been equal numbers of men and women being accepted by medical schools. As of late, however, more women are applying to medical schools than ever before. The first reason is that feminism has altered the perception that people have, females in particular, of jobs that should be done by females. You will find more women choosing careers in law enforcement, engineering, and medicine. These facts have a significant affect on the medical school itself when it comes to accepting women into the school. There is also the noticeable effect from antidiscrimination laws being enforced, even though this effect has been quite slow and erratic.
Unfortunately, there isn't any recent data to go by concerning women dropping out of medical school. In the past data showed that there were more women dropping out of medical school than men. However, their reasons for dropping out had nothing to do with academics. Some of those issues that influenced higher dropout rates, such as pressure felt due to being a minority in a school vastly comprised by men, are no longer a problem at most schools, so many feel that today's numbers are more evened out as well for dropout rates. There is power in numbers. As more and more women enter the field, they are banning together to demand discriminatory behaviors come to a stop. Some of them are subtle and some are more obvious.
A prime example? There is the professor who opened his class by telling a joke. He felt like it was friendly to tell a little icebreaker. The students were asked to name the word that did not belong - egg, sex, woman or rug; the answer was sex because you can't beat sex. Compared to many of the sexist comments that women are subjected to this may seem relatively mild but it won't change anyone's ideas of equality for women. Not only are females trying to fight the stereotypes these jokes perpetuate, females are also trying to fight other important concerns. This is best illustrated by a situation that happened recently at a well-known university. A female med student was told she could not watch as a physical was performed on a male patient because she would have to view his genitals. In the meantime in another classroom, the same woman's husband was able to perform a pelvic exam on a female patient. In addition, female students are almost always required to answer a question related to having a career and a family at the same time. Males are usually not questioned on this topic. Additional factors that serve to hinder female med students are the lack of females employed by universities on staff since these positions are not keeping up with the rise in female students, the accepted notion that after females get their licenses, they might decide not to go into the medical field after all, and the exclusion of females in certain practices, such as surgery.
One woman faculty member who has asked to remain anonymous stated that she knows for a fact that women are often denied admission based on their answer to the marriage or career question. They believe that some male interviewers will use the woman's answer against her regardless of her response. For instance, if the female indicates that she doesn't intend to have kids, or will hire a nanny for them, the questioner will tell her she needs to be there for her children. If she tells the interviewer she does want children, the interviewer will tell her her heart isn't in the right place.
In more and more interview sessions, it became obvious that the perception is that female physicians are not as objective as male physicians. Many people feel that this is just another stereotype. One second year female medical student has personally witnessed some very unprincipled women and some very caring men, but empathy is still treated as something determined by biology and sociology.
A dean of a medical school offers that he believes women posses some things that are more desirable than men. Women are definitely socialized to be more open and perceptive regarding emotions. He mentioned that in the medical field, this is an advantage in terms of patient care. The dean went onto to say that being aggressive, the typical male behavior, is a deterrent in the medical profession. However, she clarified that neither trait was an absolute.
