Parts Of London That You Might Have Viewed In TV Or Movies

The city of London is comprised of several different neighborhoods, and is extremely photogenic. Many magnificent buildings here have been well preserved, which makes London the perfect setting for a wide range of films and TV programs. Visitors who stay in a cheap London hotel will find themselves right in the heart of the action, with plenty of time to explore the city.

The River Thames is among the most famous landmarks in the city. The river snakes its way through the metropolis and is surrounded by a whole host of instantly recognizable buildings. Just a brief shot of the River Thames is enough to show viewers exactly where the program is being filmed.

One of the most recent films that used the River Thames to good effect was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The start of this film is very stormy and dramatic, as Lord Voldemort and his followers have openly returned. In one of the opening scenes we see people being attacked while crossing the River Thames on the recently constructed bridge.

The Tim Burton film Sweeney Todd also uses the River Thames to create a moody and stormy feeling. The first time the river appears in this film is at the very start, when the lead character arrives in the city after a long absence. The camera captures his emotions as the boat brings him along the river and he glimpses a number of famous buildings in the distance.

The city features a number of different districts, and each has their own characteristics. Generally speaking, the East End is seen as a poor area, while the West End is up market. Several films and television programs are set in these areas to show the background of the characters.

Some use this to good effect when they contrast the two areas. One film that does this well is the classic dramatization of Oliver! Here, the poor characters live in the East End, while the richer characters have large houses in the West End. Showing panoramic images of the streets clearly tells us a lot about the lives of the characters without having to go into a long and complicated back story narration.

The great thing about London is that people all around the world are familiar with many of the buildings here. Buildings such as the Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge have been features time and again in a wide range of productions. Many even feature scenes where characters hand from the hands of large clock faces or other parts of these buildings.

The local council goes to great lengths to ensure that these iconic buildings remain in top condition. Although many of these are centuries old, they appear almost as good as new. This makes them ideal places to shoot period dramas such as Jeeves and Wooster and Poirot.

The area of Kings Cross has also appeared in various productions. People who wander around their choice of hotel Kings Cross are sure to recognize local buildings from both films and television shows. The area also makes a great base because it is connected to the rest of the city by both bus and train.

Ben $15.99 Although having just entered his teens, pop prodigy Michael Jackson's star was still very much on the ascent, circa his second full-length release, Ben (1972). This LP should not be confused with the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from the Phil Karlson-directed "thriller" of the same name, and while blessed with an undeniable visual presence, Jackson was otherwise not involved in the creature feature. Like much of the Motown empire at the time, the title track's multimedia exposure, coupled with strong crossover appeal, insured that "Ben" scored the artist his first Pop Singles' chart-topper. Yet one interesting shift was the lack of participation from the Motown hitmaking machine known collectively as "the Corporation". While the aggregate had dominated most of the Jackson Five's early recordings and contributed their fair share to Jackson's debut, Got to Be There (1971), besides the title track, the only other cut to bear their unmistakable smooth production style is the practically perfunctory midtempo "We've Got a Good Thing Going." The catchy "Greatest Show on Earth" has a cinematic quality that stands out thanks to an excellent arrangement from James Anthony Carmichael -- one of several he scored for the project. While not a cover in the traditional sense, "People Make the World Go 'Round" was actually released within a few weeks of the Stylistics' more familiar hit. Although the reading heard here is equally impassioned, the emotive impact could arguably be greater thanks to the optimism infused with innocence in Jackson's vocals. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" owes greatly to the Heartbeats' doo wop version, as opposed to Jimmy Scott's earlier classic. Jackson is obviously quite familiar with the former's phrasing while adding an age-defying maturity of his own. Returning back to his Hitsville roots, "My Girl" is updated with a funkier rhythm. The vocalist responds in kind with his own soulful lead that soars over the freshly syncopated chorus. The score includes some call-and-response interaction similar to what he and his brothers had displayed on the Jackson Five's selections "Nobody" and "The Love You Save," among countless others. "What Goes Around Comes Around" is one of Ben's better deep cuts with the vibrant melody perfectly matched to the artist's youthful voice. Of lesser note is the hopelessly dated "message" in the filler track "In Our Small Way." Luckily, a pair of winners conclude the effort with the propulsive and funky "Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Da Day" -- which was co-written by Stevie Wonder -- and the Berry Gordy-penned midtempo "You Can Cry on My Shoulder." Ben -- along with rest of Michael Jackson's recordings for Motown, can be found as part of the excellent and thoroughly annotative three-disc Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection (2009). ~ Lindsay Planer
