Band Camp
What should I do to get in shape for Band Camp?
Oh my gosh. So, in July, I will be attending my high school marching band's band camp. I am so out of shape. I am not athletic, at all. Not to mention we will spend eight days, from 8 to five thirty! Ah! So I am not entirely sure what we have to do, but I know it's torture. Please tell me what I need to start doing so that I will not only survive my freshman year of band camp but not completely embarrass myself.
First off, good job on thinking about it now then in june. Band camp is something all marching band geeks must go through. This is what you need to do now: Work up your muscles. Band camp will only get worse with pulled muscles. Don't forget to stretch. Once summer starts, start drinking lots of water every day. My director says "If you're thirsty, it's too late." at band camp.
The week before camp, make sure you don't wear shoes that will give you blisters. I learned this the hard way. Get a little bit of sun so your skin is not paper white.
At camp, WEAR SUNSCREEN! I don't care how tan you think you are, band camp is not for lobsters. If you burn, you will have to wear pants and long sleeved shirts which will make you even more miserable. If you do burn, thin pajama pants work nicely. Wear a baseball cap. It keeps the sun out of your face and protects your scalp. Honestly, no one puts sunscreen on their scalp. Sunglasses are a great idea. The sun can be very bright in july. Eat breakfast, but try to avoid milk. Wear comfortable clothes. If it rains, make sure to wear socks. No socks in the rain can lead to blisters. Remember, the staff are in charge of keeping you safe but they can't read your mind. If you feel sick, tell someone. Don't sit down for every little thing though.
Band camp is not torture, but it's not paradise. You will have fun if you allow yourself too. No one is thrilled to be there, but that feeling when it's over is fantastic!
one last thing: do what you'e told. Staff and section leaders are busy, and will not like a sassy new marcher. I like to say, there is a methood to the madness.
Don't worry. Marching band is absolutely amazing.
