Global tendencies to population aging, demand new approaches to provision of economic safety all escalating quantity of the American pensioners.Inside the USA pensioners are right now one of the most socially protected national group. Forming from the state and private retirement systems delivering towards the American pensioners warranted replacement of lost labor earnings right after a retirement and liberty of choice concerning extra pension accruals, is one of the principal achievements in the country in social sphere. Pension incomes of Americans depend very first of all on they to themselves have earned what pensions, instead of from the sizes of the state support from budgetary funds. The total sum of pension rewards within the limits with the state and private retirement systems annually exceeds 900 bln. dollars, and cash allowances to needing persons with the retirement age, financed from budgetary funds constitute all about four,8 bln. dollars in a year. Growth of incomes of persons of retirement age promoted decrease in their dependence on the state support. About 1975 number of pensioners-addressees of dollars allowances has decreased from 2,3 million to 1,2 million persons in 2002. The American pension model combines managed on a national level the federal program of pension insurance; pension schemes for federal officers, congressmen, railwaymen, military guys; programs at level of states and regional authorities with pension schemes getting in private management, private retirement accounts. All these programs differ on financing sources, conditions, charge techniques, forms of pension positive aspects, and also on state guarantees acting according to the legislation. In 2002 cumulative pension assets constituted about 12 bln. dollars, from them about 10,7 bln. dollars it was vital on pension accruals in state and private pension funds. In view in the high social significance in the state insurance funds the last are under the special control from the energy. Structures of investments of pension implies in states and local systems can essentially differ, even so practically for all of the wide diversification of investment portfolios is characteristic. On the average on the country on government securities it's necessary only ten % of pension accruals states and neighborhood retirement systems, and on nonstate - 77 %. Inside the circumstances of a favorable economic conjuncture along with the weighed investment policy pension means bring inside the income which sizes basically exceed present payments to pensioners, accumulating in pension funds.Receipts in pension funds of states and regional authorities are formed substantially in the expense of an investment revenue. Recession inside the American economy of assets of public pension funds.Pension funds of states and regional authorities remain the largest segment with the market of pension accruals within the USA, yielding only to pension accruals on private retirement accounts. At raise in number of receivers of pensions at level of states and regional authorities the volume of payments on the typical in a year has elevated by one pensioner about 9500 dollars to 19700 dollars In numerous states and districts the sizes of pensions basically exceed this level. Even within the circumstances of economic contraction, stock market fluctuations clever management of pension assets has allowed in a variety of local and states retirement systems to get a good investment income. The decrease in value of the shares which have mentioned the sizes of investment incomes in this type of assets practically in all pension funds, has forced lots of to review from them structure from the investments. On the first location in an investment portfolio states and neighborhood retirement systems - corporate shares. On the second place in an investment portfolio states and local retirement systems - corporate bonds. This A-to-Z guide offers comprehensive coverage of the Mexican American experience. Entries range from figures such as Corky Gonzales, Joan Baez, and Nancy Lopez to general entries on bilingual education, assimilation, border culture, and southwestern agriculture. Taking a historical approach, this book's topics date back to the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a radical turning point for Mexican Americans, as they lost their lands and found themselves thrust into an alien social and legal system. The entries trace Mexican Americans' experience as a small, conquered minority, their growing influence in the 20th century, and the essential roles their culture plays in the borderlands, or the American Southwest, in the 21st century.

The American Catholic Experience

The American Catholic Experience

$19.99

Catholicism has had a profound and lasting influence on the shape, the meaning, and the course of American history. Now, in the first book to reflect the new communal and social awakening which emerged from Vatican Council II, here is a vibrant and compelling history of the American Catholic experience—one that will surely become the standard volume for this decade, and decades to come. Spanning nearly five hundred years, the narrative eloquently describes the Catholic experience from the arrival of Columbus and the other European explorers to the present day. It sheds fascinating new light on the work of the first vanguard of missionaries, and on the religious struggles and tensions of the early settlers. We watch Catholicism as it spread across the New World, and see how it transformed—and was transformed by—the land and its people. We follow the evolution of the urban ethnic communities and learn about the vital contributions of the immigrant church to Catholicism. And finally, we share in the controversy of the modern church and the extraordinary changes in the Catholic consciousness as it comes to grips with such contemporary social and theological issues as war and peace and the arms race, materialism, birth control and abortion, social justice, civil rights, religious freedom, the ordination of women, and married clergy. The American Catholic Experience is not just the history of an institution, but a chronicle of the dreams and aspirations, the crises and faith, of a thriving, ever-evolving religious community. It provides a penetrating and deeply thoughtful look at an experience as diverse, as exciting, and as powerful as America itself.

American Experience: Nixon -

American Experience: Nixon -

$19.99

Part of the American Experience series on the presidents, this three-hour documentary examines the quest, triumph, fall, and legacy of one of America's most fascinating and controversial presidents. From his modest beginnings among the lemon groves in Yorba Linda, CA, to his taking on the highest position in the nation, the story of Richard Milhous Nixon is characterized by contradiction. A staunch anti-communist, Nixon opened up relations with China and the Soviet Union and took steps to end the conflict in Vietnam. American Experience describes how Nixon promoted family values and how he used his poker earnings to finance his first political campaign. From congressman to senator to vice president under Eisenhower, a man uncomfortable in his own skin, Nixon was nonetheless a tireless campaigner. The program details the "Pink Lady" campaign, the "Checkers" speech, and the humiliation of Watergate. ~ Brooke Hodess, Rovi

American Experience: Jimmy Carter -

American Experience: Jimmy Carter -

$14.99

Includes:American Experience: Jimmy Carter, Part 2 - Hostage (2002) American Experience: Jimmy Carter, Part 1 - Jimmy Who? (2002) American Experience: Jimmy Carter, Part 2 - Hostage The second part of Jimmy Carter concentrates on the 39th president's last three years in office and his post-presidential accomplishments. By the time Carter entered the second year of his presidency, his administration had already bogged down in legislative battles and economic difficulties. Carter nonetheless persevered, signing the Panama Canal Treaty and arranging for a peace accord between Israel and Egypt at Camp David in 1978. These accomplishments, however, seemed to mean little once American hostages were taken at the U.S. Embassy in Iran at the end of 1979. The hostages would remain in captivity for 444 days and remain unreleased until Ronald Reagan became president in 1981. Carter returned to the public spotlight in 1984 when he began working with Habitat for Humanity. In 1986, groundwork began on the Carter Center, a facility designed to arrange peaceful solutions to world conflicts. In 2002 Carter became the first president to visit Cuba in over 40 years and he also received the Nobel Peace Prize. Jimmy Carter is a well-balanced portrait that includes rare film footage and a number of interviews with colleagues and historians. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi American Experience: Jimmy Carter, Part 1 - Jimmy Who? On January 20, 1977, president-elect Jimmy Carter surprised onlookers by walking the length of Pennsylvania Avenue to his inauguration. To many this offered the perfect symbol for the former peanut farmer who would be president. James Earl Carter, Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924. A hardworking student, he received an appointment to the United States Navel Academy during World War II. After graduation, he married Rosalynn Smith and pursued a career in the Navy. Following Earl Carter's (Jimmy's father) death in 1953, the couple returned to Plains where they rebuilt the family business into a successful peanut farm. Highly driven, however, Carter soon became restless and decided to run for public office for the first time in 1962. Jimmy Who? offers a fluid overview of these events by combining rare film footage and interviews with friends, colleagues, and historians. The segment climaxes with Carter's attempts to pass legislation during his first year as president. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi

David McCullough hosts this program, which originally aired as an episode of the Emmy award-winning PBS series The American Experience. ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi

American Experience: The Massie Affair -

American Experience: The Massie Affair -

In 1931, Hawaii had not yet been granted statehood, but the presence of the United States was already strong - the islands had been declared a U.S. territory, and the American military wasted no time in taking advantage of their strategic location, while agricultural firms made use of the abundant sugar and fruit crops. Late in the summer that year, news of a shocking crime swept the islands -- Thalia Fortescue Massie, whose husband was a lieutenant in the Navy, claimed that she had been beaten and raped by a gang of five men while traveling from Waikiki to Honolulu. While she claimed to be unable to identify the men who had attacked her (she also bore no physical signs of the alleged attack), and despite the lack of any evidence tying them to the crime, two Hawaiian islanders were arrested, along with two men of Japanese descent and one of Chinese heritage. At the men's trial, Mrs. Massie suddenly claimed that she did remember what had happened, offering detailed and graphic details and even identifying the accused by name. While evidence presented at their trial clearly proved the men could not have committed the crime, the jury was unable to reach a verdict, and when they were arrested on bail pending a new trial, one of the men was attacked and brutally beaten by American servicemen. Soon afterward, Grace Hubbard Fortescue, Thalia's mother, arrived in Hawaii determined to protect her family's reputation; later, one of the accused men was found dead in her car in what she eventually admitted was a revenge killing. The American Experience: The Massie Affair is a documentary that examines the facts behind this series of crimes, and explores the tragic legacy it has left on the people of Hawaii. Produced for PBS, The American Experience: The Massie Affair was first aired on April 18, 2005. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
